Do your max, rest for 30 seconds and repeat until you can't do a single pushup.

work toward being able to 3x8 each pushup progression, then move up to the next one

if I do my max I won't be able to do another one anytime soon.

a rep is each individual pushup, a set is the amount of reps you do before resting 3 x 8 means 3 sets of 8 reps each. I strongly recommend to failure instead of counting reps, but that is just what's been beneficial for me. Try counting reps, and to failure, see which on makes you more sore, the more sore you are the better you are doing

Reps is the number of times you do a certain movement.
In this case is 3 sets of 8 reps each.
Do 8, rest a few minutes (1:30-3:00) then do it again, once you've done it three times you're done.
