Take France as an example: they have a fraught historic relationship with the English (later British) and many cultural differences (their hatred of our fine cuisine, for example). However, they also appreciate the rich history of this island and its contributions to the advance of Western Civilisation. Naturally, some come to the sad conclusion that outright hatred is the reasonable stand to take, but they are vastly outnumbered by those with middle-of-the-road or even slightly positive or Anglophilic views.
Spain's recent history has resulted in a society where propaganda about the greatness of their own nation necessitates the exaggeration of the evils of an historic enemy. Note how any criticism made of Spain's history, for example, is simply dismissed and ascribed to the 'Black Legend' spawned by England. Spaniards' knowledge of Britain is virtually nothing, yet they never fail to speak of our Isles as if nothing had ever happened here other than our use as a harbour for subhuman, piratical filth. Based, yes, but retarded also.
