It isn't "your ignorance" it is just a myth that everyone believes even though there has been no evidence of it happening.
a great book for scots is "The Orygynale Cronykil of Scotland" by Andrew Wyntoun as it preserves the best quality scots you will realistically find. although the material itself isn't incredibly high quality it is very good scots. even though it is from the 15th century the scots is used there is still useful for more current scots, but the words how they are written then are said differently now. I recommend the david macpherson edition.
more modern texts are available like the new testament but I find these sort of poor scots with too many English words but it still would help immensely.
