Beefheart > Zappa

Zappa's music sounds like Sesame Street while Beefheart sounds like insane blues prog done on cocaine

I love both, the main difference is that Beefheart's discography is basically perfect (Yes, even the 'bad' albums) and Zappa recorded a lot of average material

To be fair, Zappa also shat out albums at a rate that would make King Gizzard blush. Mediocre releases are inevitable when you do that. He's still got enough great albums to rival Beefheart, even if they also come with a bunch of stuff that didn't need to get recorded.

this

Except Beefheart is utter, utter shit

Absolutely, it's still a remarkable discography. I enjoy a huge chunk of it up until the early-80s, which is where I start to lose focus. Jazz from Hell is probably the latest Zappa I've heard that I've really liked.

Pleb, even if you dont like TMR, albums like Shiny Beast and Safe As Milk are still really fucking good

I totally agree, or at least I would, if they weren't tremendous piles of steaming shit

>Zappa
>genius

Zappafags are more delusional than Tool fans

There's a Frank Zappa song I once downloaded on Limewire when I was a kid. I was obsessed with it, but I forgot the name and have never been able to find it again because of how huge his discography is. Feels bad man.

If you can't appreciate safe as milk I hate to tell you about your pleb results

>Zappa's music sounds like
Confirmed for not having heard much Zappa

Hopefully it's better news than my sexual reassignment surgery results. My dick looks like a tomato.

So what are his essentials?

listen to more music

Childhood is thinking beefheart is good

Adulthood is knowing that beefheart ripped all of his shticks from zappa and was desperately trying to ride his coattails

Time to through his work one song at a time user.

irony and shitposting has never resulted in anything meaningful and lasting.

If I had to give someone a basic Zappa listening, I'd subscribe the first three Mothers albums (Freak Out, Absolutely Free, We're Only in It for the Money) and then Hot Rats, Over-Nite Sensation and One Size Fits All.
There are probably plenty of people who would disagree with that, it leaves out some of my favourites of his like pic related, and some significant periods in his discography, but it's probably not a bad list of records to get a decent idea of what Zappa was up to. Those albums are more or less how I got into him.

You are profoundly ignorant. What is Voltaire?

Mozart shitposted. What is meaningful is subjective. All of franks music is serious.

I meant to say prescribe, not subscribe :P

That's a decent staring list, but I feel like Apostrophe should always be included when starting with him. It's probably the best "Zappa in a nutshell" album you could give to someone that's never heard of him.

You're right, Apostrophe might be a good choice if you had to do one album. Especially if you've never heard anything like it before. It's got a decent mix of goofy songs and extended guitar stuff, though honestly I feel like any of Overnite Sensation/Apostrophe/One Size Fits All work for that period.

These are all fantastic.

I think Joe's Garage deserves a listen early on because of its iconic solos (especially Watermelon in Easter Hay)

Thoughts on Jazz From Hell?

How was it like? Did it sounded like from the 70s, 80s or 90s?

His talent would not have manifested itself in any other way if he had not shitposted

Possibly the most idiotic thing I’ve ever seen on this board. Nice Reddit simile faggot

My first experience was Roxy & Elsewhere. I listened to that live album over and over again.
If I had to choose one record for a newbe it would be Over-Nite Sensation.
These are his most accessible albums by far.
We're Only In It For The Money is a masterpiece if you want to listen to his humor and insane creativity.

Definitely start with Apostrophe
