Why write a great song when you can write muzak for music students and rake in the shekels?

none of that guarantees a great song
in my opinion, a great song starts with a great melody (usually vocal)
everything after fills sonic space and/or compliments the melody (chords, percussion, etc)
if you can't write a great melody, you can't write a great song

Why does he need to? Not all musicians are composers. His knowledge helps him communicate with other musicians that compose music and play with said musicians. No one really needs to like whatever he’s composing though, he’s doing it because he likes/enjoys it first.
