When he's good he's better than most, and there's some truly fantastic solo songs. Maudlin Street, and pretty much Viva Hate as a whole, is fucking brilliant, though that has a lot to do with Vini Reilly. On the other hand, a lot of his solo stuff is niche and not for me, not arsed about the cabartesque side of things. Get a Best Of. However, I appreciate a man that sticks to his views and doesn't give a fuck. There's not much of those left in music.

Disagree. Alsatian Cousin, EILS, Late Night Maudlin Street, Suedehead, Break Up the Family and I Don't Mind If You Forget Me are all wonderful. The rest is solid too. Do you like any of his other albums?

yeah, other than viva hate (which is not bad but just a bit wobbly) his 88-95 parlophone run is rock solid, bona drag is an all-time top 10 record, and the comeback albums of the '00s are future classics imo. world peace incredibly strong as well

His band (or bands, didn't follow who or when) is thoroughly mediocre at best. That means it's a complete waste of time listening to the music. And the lyrics? From what I've seen - more and more self-parody.
People who claim in earnest that the solo stuff is better than the Smiths need to reboot their senses.
