he's no fiona apple

Are there people who genuinely think he's good on his own? Everything after his solo debut is just mediocre and it doesn't help that his live band is shit. Why is he so angry at Marr anyways?

You Are the Quarry is better than anything The Smiths released.

I Can’t Fucking Wait Until Morrissey Dies

When he's good he's better than most, and there's some truly fantastic solo songs. Maudlin Street, and pretty much Viva Hate as a whole, is fucking brilliant, though that has a lot to do with Vini Reilly. On the other hand, a lot of his solo stuff is niche and not for me, not arsed about the cabartesque side of things. Get a Best Of. However, I appreciate a man that sticks to his views and doesn't give a fuck. There's not much of those left in music.

WHEN YOU WAALK WITHOOOUT EEEASE

viva hate is fucking overrated. slapdash ass record

what the fuck is slapdash about Suedehead you utter fucking mong

Disagree. Alsatian Cousin, EILS, Late Night Maudlin Street, Suedehead, Break Up the Family and I Don't Mind If You Forget Me are all wonderful. The rest is solid too. Do you like any of his other albums?

everyone falls off eventually. he did enough to secure his legendary status

yeah, other than viva hate (which is not bad but just a bit wobbly) his 88-95 parlophone run is rock solid, bona drag is an all-time top 10 record, and the comeback albums of the '00s are future classics imo. world peace incredibly strong as well

Just listen to Bona Drag bro

His band (or bands, didn't follow who or when) is thoroughly mediocre at best. That means it's a complete waste of time listening to the music. And the lyrics? From what I've seen - more and more self-parody.
People who claim in earnest that the solo stuff is better than the Smiths need to reboot their senses.

>admits to not having a firm grasp on his solo career
>tells others who are that they need to reboot their senses
kek. just listen to bona drag, vauxhall and i, your arsenal and you are the quarry.

The new album is great, and desu, everything Your Arsenal and on is better than the smiths

I tried each time when a new one came out. Yeah, the first ones are more agreeable, but still pedestrian compared to bands who actually are inspired and have a little more ambition than accompanying the icon. Later it got pedestrian and drab, at best.
>a firm grasp
It's just not worth it. We only have so many years on this earth.

i obviously disagree. the band(s) sound very inspired, especially the classic solo Your Arsenal lineup. if you haven't already, give pic related a listen. it's a collection of all of his singles and b-sides from 1988-1995, and it's one of my personal favorite albums.

There are a lot of absolutely delusional solo-Morrissey nuthuggers on this board who'll claim he's BETTER THAN EVER MATE, WAY BETTER THAN THE SMITHS, which is an opinion you'll only hear echoed angrily in these small, insignificant threads and not anywhere else that matters in the world.

The truth is, young Morrissey was at his peak lyrically, both with the band and shortly thereafter during his solo career, and then he started to decline the older he got. Maybe he stopped reading poetry, which he loved. Maybe he became obsessed in trying to talk in new ways. I dunno. But the release of List of The Lost was the official confirmation that he'd degenerated as a writer:

>“At this, Eliza and Ezra rolled together into the one giggling snowball of full-figured copulation, screaming and shouting as they playfully bit and pulled at each other in a dangerous and clamorous rollercoaster coil of sexually violent rotation with Eliza’s breasts barrel-rolled across Ezra’s howling mouth and the pained frenzy of his bulbous salutation extenuating his excitement as it whacked and smacked its way into every muscle of Eliza’s body except for the otherwise central zone.”

Now, he's mild. There was precisely one song I truly liked in Low In High School. Overall, his music does not give me bulbous salutations anymore.

solo moz nuts are a necessary foil to the marr mouthbreathers who swamp smiths/moz threads saying that they would've been better as an instrumental band. and on the whole i think morrissey's solo career is underrated, compared to all the accolades the smiths keep receiving. sure, he pretty much lost it after vauxhall but up until then there really wasn't a great dip in quality imo. the court case fried his mind and turned him into a parody act, and today he's pretty much just coasting on former glories. but if you're gonna lambast morrissey for putting out derivative/trend-chasing/uninspired baggy and glam rock records early on, let me remind you that the smiths had their fair share of stinkers as well: rockabilly throwaways, moaning balladry, silly knees-up stompers, and some of the stiffest, whitest funk known to man

Maladjusted came out before that and was widely panned. It's a bad and somewhat forgotten album even if I do like some of the songs in it, particularly Ammunition I think.

And no, it isn't underrated. He's one of the most famous solo artists that separated from a band. He still fills out stadiums everywhere he goes. He's rated. When people say he's gotten lazy, it's just because he did. But that happens to pretty much all musicians, and in some band's cases it takes less than 5 years. He had a long streak of inspiration as it is.

So is I Am Not A Dog On A Chain.

how the hell was morrissey so big on his first solo tour of the u.s., around kill uncle? he played arenas usually reserved for rock royalty and broke ticket-sales records all over the place. was this the power of college radio and the modern rock chart?
