I guess my objection is that the similarity is not something that ties it exclusively to pop music. To me this seems kind of like if we were discussing music from the perspective of instrumental jazz fans, saying that jazz with vocals is the "tech death of jazz" just because it also happens to be a genre with vocals, but which also focuses on talented instrumentation. There is in some way a greater similarity, but that doesn't mean that singing jazz is the tech death of jazz. It's a comparison with some element of truth in it, but which is ultimately not that significant.

I don't think that pop's and pm's treatment of instrumentation are really that comparable. Most pop is profoundly vocal-centric. Though there are some far more vocally driven power metal bands (looking at you Edguy), overall the genre is far more comfortable with letting the instrumentalists just do their thing for extended periods without singing. That's significantly more rare in pop, to the point that a lot of pop fans will have a hard time getting into even the more accessible metal bands because there's too many moments where the singer just isn't doing anything. Ask a pop fan to listen to Nightwish's Elan and they'll probably enjoy it, because it's almost entirely vocal. Ask them to listen to a Nightwish song that's more representative of PM (Stargazers, for example) and they're more likely to get bored or say that "too much is happening."

No it isn't. Burzum, along with every other Norwegian black metal band from the same era, were influenced by Bathory. But Varg pretty quickly started making his own brand of black metal that sounded nothing like Bathory ever made.

There is a lot added there to make that song sound like power metal, and I'm not sure that much of the original song truly comes across other than the main "riff" just because it's very catchy. If you really want to, you can do some really wild genre bending while keeping the skeleton of the original work. It also features a lot of added in power metal shredding tropes like sweep picking, finger tapping, etc. to metal it up. Even then it only sounds like a very specific kind of power metal. It would sound very out of place on a Virgin Steele, Demons & Wizards, or Nightwish Album.

Yup, but those tropes are just there for decoration, they don't mess with the structure of the song (the skeleton as you termed it). It's the guitar equivalent of a drum fill at the end of a measure.

I don't think anyone denies the validity of their first few albums, they truly became over-rated once they started appealing to moms and posers with the black album, load, and reload.
