Metal is better than straightforward punk, but punk derivative genres like noise rock and post punk are better than metal.

As long as it's based.

My favorite stuff in both genres tends to be where the two meet - stuff like crust punk, underground metalcore, grindcore, crossover thrash, sludge metal, etc.

I like punk's idealism, lyricism, emphasis on melody and noise, and emotional expression. But I like metal's complexity, adventurousness, and imagination. Put them together and it's usually at least interesting.

Punk is dated

I went through a punk phase, for about all of 2 weeks before I discovered heavy metal.

I went through a metal phase, then I hit puberty.
