there is no shame in buying a cheap knockoff provided its set up well and plays nicely. its just a brand on a headstock, they are all just c&c'd hardwoods underneath

This. I always wanted a tele but every one I played sounded like shit. Then I stumbled upon a PRS that had the sound I was looking for. Also plays really nice and easy. So I bought that. Wouldnt mind a tele one day tho. There was also this no name brand guitar that looked so odd (snake scale texture and pattern on standard body) but it sounded and played amazing. Kinda regret not buying it for the gimmick

Go for the ESP. Or a Jackson. Or a Solar, those are the bomb-shit-diggity.

Sorry I replied too quickly. Wasn't trying to be a dick or anything. I'd go for the Squire Bullet. If you want, down the road you can swap out the pickups for some better ones and have a pretty solid guitar for not a lot of money. Hope you enjoy whatever you end up buying, regardless and that you stay safe and healthy during these trying times.

>$950 Also above my price range, just a tad
My budget is about $200-$300 for the guitrar, maybe another $100 for the amp
Kevin Baker
out of the ones listed, i like the ESP-LTD MH-53, yamahas are nice, i dig squiers, but i play metal so im a little biased.

You didn't sound like a dick at all user Thanks for the recommendation, and the wishes!
Hudson Jackson
Used to have one that was actually pretty nice until the neck started warping. Not a bad starter for sure

if you can go a little higher for the amp, a boss katana is loads of fun for beginners, it has a ton of configurable effects so you won't need to fuck around with pedals and stuff
Jason Sanders
No can do, that's a $300 amp user
Maybe some day, but not for now
Kayden Foster
All guitars sound the same.

No problem fren. Also, take a look at Fender's G-DEC amps since you're also looking for an amp. You can get them used all day for less than $100. I bought one as a practice amp and it sounds really good/has lots of features for what it costs. You can also expose yourself to a lot of different effects, too to get an idea for what you like and don't like if you eventually start building a pedal board. It's a fun little amp with really good value, especially used.

the 50w version is cheaper, or the mini

Thanks user! Diddn't do a lot of research on amps but found a Fender Mustang v2, and also a Fender Mustang (I'm guessing v1) for a bit lesser than the v2. I'll try and hunt for some more used amps a bit later.
And you seem to know your way around this stuff so I think you'd be a good person to ask: what should I look/check for in a used guitar before buying it?
Cameron Scott
>mini that's more like it! $120 for new
As I said before I haven't done a lot of research on amps yet but I''ll keep this one in mind. Does look neat and what you described sounds interesting. Is boss a good brand?
Jonathan Russell
Yamaha Pacificas are way better quality strat copies than equally priced Squiers. Older used ones are way cheap.

Honestly, there isn't a whole lot but I'd say the most important thing is to play it in person. I've bought effects and amps used, but guitars are one thing I refuse to buy sight unseen. One of the reasons is that sometimes people have no idea how to set up a guitar and they do retarded shit to the truss rod and it ends up either breaking or they warp the neck. If the rod is broken, it's gonna cost more money to fix it than is worth it on a beginner guitar. The other thing too is the condition of the frets. Depending on how old the guitar is, it might need a refret or the frets might need to be leveled out. Also, depending on what type of bridge it is look at the screws and make sure they aren't stripped. I guess the last thing is when you play it, roll the tone knobs and around and volume knob. If it's doing weird stuff like scratching, cutting out, etc. then the wiring might be fucked (it could also just need a cleaning, if there's a lot of dust or debris on the pots).

i have a harley benton, its pretty nice for the money. shipping to the US might be prohibitively expensive though
Thanks a bunch man, looks like great advice and just want I needed.
I think it would be better if I take a friend who knows guitars with me while buying

>Harlwy benton Just had a look, that brand seems really cheap (money, not quality). Will it last me a decent amount of time?

Has squire taken a turn for the better in recent years? I haven't bought a guitar in 20 years. But back then they were shit tier. Same with epiphone. >PRS >Fender acoustic electric cutaway Both about 20ish years old. Both still sound the way they did when I bought em.
