East Asian countries are putting out videos on how to make masks out of household paper products and saying that said handmade masks are almost as effective, but just begging people to mask up. Wear a paper towel on your face, it's better than nothing.

N95 is useful BUT not for people with low exposure. Hospitals have high concentration of virus, not to mention nosocomial patogens (proof : try sleeping in a hospital ICU for 3 days straight and see if you still healthy or not)
What saddened me is that while people using N95 once and threw it away, doctors (who need it the most) were forced to use it for a couple days before threw it away (due to VERY low stock). Y'all should use a regular mask.

Corona virus is transmitted primarily through fluid transfer. Medical masks, including the one pictured, are essentially one-way water resistant, and thus stop the droplets from accessing your mucus membranes or being ingested/inhaled.
As was mentioned, they also need to be used in combination with glasses.
A perfect seal isn't required on either to reduce the probability of the airborne droplets from entering your system, but the better the seal the better the chance of being protected.
Masks can be reused if baked at 160oF for 30 minutes, sprayed liberally with alcohol and allowed to dry, or put in a UV cleaner. Otherwise, best practice is to dispose of them after a day of use, otherwise the moisture from your breath will grow molds and what not.

Traditional (surgical masks) are as effective as n95 masks, they're used depending on hows your conctact with people. ER services should use N95 or better, while ICU should use n95 in addition to some other protections. ie face masks googles.

A full face positive pressure face mask. This means a whole SCBA. If it's not positive pressure you need a full face mask with a p100 filter and lots of replacements. This leaves your ears exposed so you need a medical grade tyvek suit, booties and gloves. Every seam taped. Or a full hazmat suit, usually requires an SCBA tho.
Trust me most first responders and military forces operating across the country are grossly unprepared for something like this.
