It's definitely not worth the time to rebuild them. Any real shop won't even rebuild them anymore because it's hard to get parts and not worth the liability.
And you're right you don't technically need to replace both, but if one blew out the other will most likely follow soon after

I hate MSI not op but two of my msi products shit the bed within a year. I get one of them back tomorrow, even though the products are not top tier their service is actually the best I have ever seen no questions asked just sent me the new parts
I replaced my rear drums and shoes last fall. And now they scream like a banshee in the morning when I'm leaving for work. To the point where they're actually vibrating my car. It stops squeaking after I get moving. It's just the first few times I apply the brakes.
They're the self adjusting kind. I think I installed them right. They're working. They stop the car, parking brake works.
