CO2 reflects infra-red. Same as a car's window. UV and visibile light come in and are scattered by the surface of the earth at various frequencies. Infra red is now bounced back down to earth more than before because of higher CO2 concentrations. The means the heat is essentially trapped by the atmosphere, slowly heating the earth. (Oceans mostly).

Greenhouse largely methane and carbon dioxide gases trap heat into the atomosphere leading to increase in temperature causing more melting of ice which often traps pre-historic methane leading to a positive feedback loop. Increase in temperature also causes sea level rise because of ice cap melting and also increased temperature of water it expands.
