Can't imagine in living in recent suburban development. I'm borderline exurbs, my immediate environment is the tightly packed suburban neighborhood development, but not too far are woods and stuff.
Think about it though OP, traditional American neighborhoods were even more densely packed, arguably they had greater character, but lacking privacy in that sense isn't so bad.

We don't really have massive sprawling suburbs in London. There is always some kind of corner shop within a mile of where you live, no matter how residential. Usually it's more like 3-500 metres away.
