My psychiatrist tried to convince me to wear a belt when I'm lifting. Are they just a meme or do they actually have advantages?

yes you should be using them with your heavy lifts otherwise you'll have fucked up joints/back in your later stages of life

I think the general consensus is that belts are great for heavy lifts but don’t become reliant on it for every single lift e.g. warmups. A belt added a few pounds to my lifts, I like to pretend I’m equipping my 4str 4 stam leather belt.

???

Why are you taking advice from him? A neurologist at least would make sense.

Belts increas eneuromuscular efficiency and allow you to use more of your core. They'll actually help you make more ab gains.

There are medical psychiatrists.

Belts are cool, but ok I’ll bite

They don't actually do anything. Anything they're "preventing" from happening is still happening on the inside. I still use one though because it's a psychological thing.

Psychologists are memes but a Psychiatrist is a legitimate M.D Specialist with twice the education. They know their shit.

Belts are either for holding your pants up or if you become the undisputed heavyweight champion.

They're just a meme. And the belt is personal preference.

There's literally no reason to not use a belt for any lift that requires you to brace. It's just bro "wisdom" when they say you need to lift a certain amount before using it because you don't want to look like a dork strapping on your lever belt for your 2pl8 squat.

Bracing the abs supports your spine during a taxing load. Using a belt doesn't make your abs stop working and in fact if it increases the weight you can do safely it gives you more ab gains.

As per the first law of thermodynamics they shouldn't be necessary, but empirical evidence would suggest that they are.
If you like them they will make you lift heavier than not using them. If you don't you will learn to brace your midsection without them. It's one of those fun choices where you can't go wrong.

wrote that wrong he is actually a morbidly obese psychologist

Subtle bait, as it should be done. 8/10 OP.

I use belt with heavy squat, diddly and OHP. Better be safe than sorry. Also embracing your core is much more easier cause you can thrust your power belly against it lol.

If you're lifitng anthing below 135, regardless what exercise then no

You need to do 135 lateral raises before you're allowed to wear a belt?

Did you mean to say 315? Hell, even 225 would be kinda understandable.

This. But even then, what the fuck does a neurologist know about it? Lot of MDs know jack shit about fitness and nutrition. You should ask a physical therapist or someone into sports medicine.

sounds like non-psychiatric medical advice for avoiding hernias.
Maybe he's had some pts get hernias from lifting and decided to let him know a belt would help.
Weird type of advice to receive some a shrink but it's sound.

Confusing a psychologist for a psychiatrist is pretty fucking insulting to the psychiatrists.
But yeah you should wear a belt. Don't let you core lag though.

Ah yes risk snapping you're shit up over 40 fucking dollars, why wouldn't you just fucking wear a belt

I use my belt for heavy squats and DL all teh time. Makes it much easier to recover from them for me personally and lets me train harder and more often.

A psychiatrist must be a M. D.

Hell yeah wear a belt.

That is just wrong you doofus
