If you're defining bad diet by way more calories than you really need but you're still getting most of you basic nutrients than to some degree yes. I'm not a big dude I was 5"8 around a 140-150lbs when I swam "competitively". During the summer we had two practices a day with the 1st being 2hr's and any were from 4000 to 6000 yards and the 2nd being an hour of "lifting" and about 2000 yards. The few times I counted I was definitely eating around 4k calories a day and maintaining weight so yeah I guess you can outrun a bad diet. That being said I have absolutely no desire to work out like this ever again and for most people they simply don't have the time to work out long enough to out run poor food descisions.

yeah try swimming for 5-6 hours a day at an olympic level pace and you’ll have a TDEE of 8-10k kcal a day too
