Ex: dumbbell flies improve your chest and weighted crunches improve your midriff

Don't. Just alternate sides with a consistent weight. Keep your core tight and don't swing around as that is easy to do when just doing one side at a time. If you can't, then brace on a doorframe or something with your freehand
