4 has always been my favorite. Mechanically it may be lacking compared to others by the fact that it quickly makes it clear, at least for your first playthough, that no character is really safe adds a bit more connection to the characters.

For me the best are V and III, it went downhill from VII. Every subsequent game is garbage, they have good ost tho.

I feel like FFX did it right with the summon system, where the summon became a party member as opposed to the earlier systems where the summon was just a stronger spell with flashier graphics.
That being said I wish my main man Alexander had been in that game.
