I respect the idea of DRM-free but has anyone actually bought a game off GOG?

In practice abandonware exists, but only applies to old games that are no longer sold. This obviously is not the case with any old games sold on GOG.com, Steam or any other store.

the wider audience doesn't care about the no drm principle, they love their subscriptions
you would need like a year internet blackout for them to care about owning stuff without depending on anyone else beyond the first download

I bought star wars battlefront 2

at least in GOG you get to keep your game forever right? unlike steam?
