Terrible optimisation, montage problems about sound mixing-mastering like you hear npc dialogs from very far but cannot hear when they close . Loading screens, stealth is not rewarding and focus mode made everything easy. 3/10.

It all went wrong when they didn't get Stephen Russell to reprise his role. Yeah, because knock-off Russell did such a great job and everyone praised the parkour motion capture he did.

I'm not talking about footsteps, dialogs has very bad mixing problems. I played on hdd so, okay.

Probably development hell, everything seems to be hard-coded so you can only jump, shoot rope arrows, climb ledges, etc where the devs want you to. The game is basically moving around in an environment and triggering context-specific actions, which is the exact opposite of how Looking Glass Studios and Ion Storm used to make games.

I'd love if there was a documentary, post mortem, article, essay or anything with more insight about pretty much every game. It's great to hear why a game turned out the way it did. part of me hopes it was because they went with "play it your way" approach and weren't just turning the game into an action title. which is still wrong because thief was never deus ex, for example. stealthing about was always the only way to play it seeing as getting into fights would just bite you in the ass.

Ion Storm did a good job with Deus Ex and even Thief: Deadly Shadows wasn't bad.
Arkane's Arx Fatalis and Prey carry their legacy as well

paled in comparison to the previous games, dishonored came out two years earlier and did everything it did better

Dishonored is great too, but mentioning it in Thief threads always results in retards talking shit about it because it isn't the exact same game.

Which is amusing because it just emphasizes a point that a stealth character, one trying to be taken seriously, cannot HAVE any standout design. You are by definition trying to blend in and not be detected.

They really fucked up the pacing.

All Thief games are supposed to be slow, methodical, think-it-out type games. This one was designed for parkour and 200 XP headshots.

The "dash" was a mistake. It was fine in Dishonored when you could teleport and slaughter people, but Thief was always a much slower game.
