Are turned based games really outdated?

What are some advantage?

They're only outdated to ADHD kids who aren't medicated to see games can come in any format and still be enjoyable.

nah I fucking love slow paced games and turn based shit drives me crazy. It's repetitive without feeling good to play

literally the only defense you'll get for turn based combat is it's "comfy" or they'll call you a retard for not blindly enjoying it

because there is no true way to defend it, vanilla turnbased combat (as in, without strategy or action elements) is outdated

If you're mindlessly using the same attacks its pretty bad.

If you have to come up with a strat for certain fights its good.

Why do you retards keep having to bring up this argument again and again? There's no point to it.

Medicate.

is pokemon vanila turned based?

also do you prefer group commands like golden sun or turned based games like pokemon?

do you prefer group commands like golden sun and Romancing SaGa or turned based games like pokemon?

pokemon is one of the few turnbased combats I'll defend, as it's all about limited options and you only have 4 moves

there's more strategy there than the average jrpg

Are first person shooters outdated?

Hmm, well I like them so I guess they aren't for you.

Oh god he's one of those competitive pokemon players.

these kinds of threads only ever bring up jrpgs, what about civilization and worms?

There are annoying shit old turn base games do like random encounters and some turn base games are absolutely ass.
But its not outdated and there are popular games that are still turn base including pokemon, dragon quest, persona, etc...
They are usually chill to play.

Personae 5 is turned based and was very successful for anime game standards

Biggest advantage is that their gameplay is practically immune to negative effects from network latency.

>there's more strategy there than the average jrpg
yes use water against the fire monster

One advantage is that its simpler to make, whilst still being potentially fun
As the other user said pokemon style where you're just mashing one attack over and over isn't fun. But if you actually design a complex turned based battle system with fun moves and strategies involved, it can be a way for smaller/indie devs to make a fun RPG if they don't have the resources to program and/or animate real time combat

I wouldn't consider persona turned based, since you can throw out multiple commands at real time with instant feedback for each command you entered

time to think and plan, less stressful, more fun for people who don't like feeling pressured

You would be incorrect. It's still turn-based.

There's nothing wrong with turn-based games. XCOM is one and it's carried by its gameplay functions, same with Slay the Spire.
It's just the incestuous JRPG variety that nobody likes.

Havent played 5 but 1~4 were trad turn base

How you do turn-based matters. There are ways to make it take more than 3 brain cells.

Resonance of Fate is one of my favorite TBS games because it requires actual planning and even when you execute attacks, you still need to make decisions during your attack in real time and have to pay attention for obstacles, jumps, and bonus damage, on top of figuring out targeting to spread damage where it's needed.

It gets a bit repetitive but it's still a wonderful premise and I recommend everyone try it.

All the good turn based forms of combat are western.

>Worms
>X-Com
>Into the Breach

Braindead

If you can get stuck on a hard boss, turn around, oneshot the same enemy over and over again for 20 minutes, go back to the boss, and beat it first try without changing strategies, your game is poorly made.

Nearly all RPGs have this problem. The only ones that don't are ones that limit the number of encounters (LISA, good Fire Emblems), or where the player's level is a very minor factor in their strength (Undertale, Dark Souls).

In turn-based RPGs this problem is even worse, because there isn't a fun control scheme to prop the game up. NieR Automata has the above problem really badly, but at least even though the game is poorly paced and poorly balanced, the good game feel props it up. For a turn-based RPG, all you have are the game mechanics and stats. If your game is so lazily designed that the player's level matters more than any sort of exploration of your game's mechanics, then it's going to be incapable of being well-paced and never require the player to be actually engaged.

Real-Time w/ Pause is still the best RPG combat system

TRPG and SRPG turn based are alright since they also incorporate positioning and use of terrain to add layers of strategy

some games like metal max require you to equip a particular type of weapon to hit the weak point or armor to deflect the damage to beat the boss. Do games like those fall into this category?

>grinding makes challenge disappear
Thats more of a player problem than a game problem. I dont think its bad to have an option to mindlessly grind away then one shot a boss but its usually extremely time consuming and boring to grind.
There are definitely good turn based games where you can beat the game without doing any grinding.
