Does it excite anyone else that we're STILL learning about gems like SM 64 decades after they were first released?

different texture, rendered properly

Because the bugged smoke is what everyone saw, if they changed it you would just make a soul vs soulless image with it.

okay, just checked it's something completely different in the ds version.

Guess we'll never find out then, probably even original devs won't remember the intention.

SOUL VS SOULLESS

Just checked, the DS version uses a new smoke cloud looking texture, so it's technically fixed

its interesting in the sense that such a old game is so difficult to break apart that it still can have unknown elements, like that secret coin in dk64, wheras anything in modern games is datamined within the first day or even earlier

It's 100% a bug. The texture is stored in a format that takes up more storage, but is called in an incorrect format in the code.

>intention
the smoke particle's code has it using an incorrect format for the texture, which is why it produces the black garbage pixels rather than the intended image
I'm not a betting man, but I would bet actual, real dollars on it being a very, very simple bug, not some grand masterminded plan to take a properly drawn image and turn it into garbage pixels for "aesthetic effect," when they could have just drawn literal pixels instead

The culture of "I WAS FIRST" takes some of the fun out of life

>ask if people get excited about mario
>some don't give a shit
>wow do you even like bideo games!?? you don't belong here
