Here's a secret: nobody actually likes turn-based combat in and of itself.
It's just that JRPGs have long, winding stories and certain kinds of people like those, so they put up with the "gameplay"

just because you get bored when there isn't goombas to stomp and epic bing bing yippee 1-ups to collect doesn't mean everyone is the same way.

If that's what you have to tell yourself to maintain the illusion of enjoying those games, I will not stop you

The best turn based combat I've ever experienced was the Cultists Tower in Final Fantasy VI. The rest of the game and other games fall into one of two categories; spam attack until you win, or die a billion times and have to look up a guide to tell you the obscure way to defeat the enemy. I like turn based combat, but I wish there was less attack spamming while also having a level of strategy that someone could reasonably figure out.
