Silicon Valley is racing to build the next version of the Internet. Fortnite might get there first

>shared, virtual space that’s persistently online and active, even without people logging in
>It will have its own economy, complete with jobs, shopping areas and media to consume
So, it's the internet?

Yeah, what exactly is the difference?

Sounds a lot like Second Life, but I'm sure there's an obvious reason why they're not making that comparison.

Itll be like Snow Crash, its a shared virtual reality and you can walk around and stuff.
Basically second life but with every website.

Internet 2.0 would just be web 2.0 but worse

Fortchads win again

and will be absolutely worse than the current net unless it's like futurama or SAO where it jacks into your mind and you have your senses inside the thing.

China already does this, and it’s kind of great. Inb4 communism. Ironically, the communist state has taken capitalism to its furthest form. You can elect to have a portion of your paycheck paid out in digital currency, with a rate of 1:1. Even the banks don’t offer you this kind of deal. And you can do everything with their digital money, pay bills, buy real life shit, and even services. Some places don’t even take cash anymore. Now imagine if to shop you didn’t even have to leave your home. 360 cameras allow you to shop and look at goods in real time from a virtual world and you can have them delivered to your place. With 5G, you’ll always be on, and with Epic’s licensing success lately, you can look like anyone you want, as you walk the streets, GPS signals will display your avatar in real time to others. You will literally never stop being connected.

If all the normies fuck off to this metaverse, and the old internet returns to the 90's wild west, I'm all for it

The next step for the internet isn't a new internet. It will be classifying the internet as a virtual country. It will be extraterritorial and have its own government with ambassadors to other countries. The internet will become its own legally distinct entity away from the landed ground it's on meaning doing something illegal in like Russia would be able to be prosecuted anywhere else the internet is. You'll be able to claim dual citizenship with "the internet" and it will have its own tax structure, laws, etc.
