>The next version of the Internet is often described as the Metaverse, a term borne from science fiction, describing a shared, virtual space that’s persistently online and active, even without people logging in. It will have its own economy, complete with jobs, shopping areas and media to consume. The Metaverse is inevitable, many believe, and the Silicon Valley C-suite has been obsessed with the idea — as has a video game company in Cary, North Carolina.
>In recent years, there’s been serious talk about how to build the Metaverse, and who will build it first. One only needs to witness Facebook and Google’s Internet success today, given how both companies dominate digital business, to understand the eagerness with which companies hurry to populate this next frontier. In observing that pursuit, there’s the very real possibility that Fortnite, the video game that became a global phenomenon that turned celebrities into players and players into celebrities, has been building the foundations of the Internet’s future right before our glazed eyes.
>Fortnite’s creators at Epic Games have not been shy about this ambition. Its CEO, Tim Sweeney, wants this conversation in public, and has made overt references in the last few years in establishing Fortnite as something more than a game. He’s even hinted that this transformation could begin by the end of this year.
Second life and those early 90s life sims got there first
Gabriel Jackson
no
Christopher Gonzalez
>Epic Games isn't laying down fiberoptic cable in the ground fake news, they're not building an internets.
Owen Johnson
>they're not building an internets. >internets.
Grandpa, this isn't the early 2010's anymore.
Charles Barnes
I read the full article on wpost but I don't really get it. How would one go around making a metaverse, and what changes would fortnite need to go through to get there.
Eli Flores
>describing a shared, virtual space that’s persistently online and active, even without people logging in. It will have its own economy, complete with jobs, shopping areas and media to consume. So...the Internet?
Joseph White
Yeah that's the thing I don't get.. How would a metaverse be more better than the Internet itself ?
Jason Wilson
I thought silicon valley is filled with mostly scammers who scams money out of stupid suckers who fall for them
>The next version of the Internet is often described as the Metaverse, a term borne from science fiction, describing a shared, virtual space that’s persistently online and active, even without people logging in. It will have its own economy, complete with jobs, shopping areas and media to consume. This is complete fucking bullshit that no one with more than a single brain cell has ever actually believed Seriously, the next "version" of the internet? Fuck off, pseudo-intellectual tryhard mongoloid.
Cameron Turner
Good, the sooner the better. The boring generation can fuck off to metaverse whatever. I'm staying.
Colton Powell
Can my girlfriend be a metawhore? Can I be a metacuck?
Hudson Evans
Fuck that shit. The internet's a mess already. This will make it worse. We need to go back to mid-90s internet.
Brayden Martin
as much as i would kill for my own netnavi, there's not better version of the internet outside of a futurams esque you mind jack that lets you go into the internet with your senses intact.
Christopher Roberts
god this sounds gay as fuck.
Luke Walker
Already have been since 07.
Kevin Cox
Internet 2.0 literally just sounds like Internet 1.0
Brandon Taylor
>shared, virtual space that’s persistently online and active, even without people logging in >It will have its own economy, complete with jobs, shopping areas and media to consume So, it's the internet?
Easton Adams
Yeah, what exactly is the difference?
Brayden White
Sounds a lot like Second Life, but I'm sure there's an obvious reason why they're not making that comparison.
Itll be like Snow Crash, its a shared virtual reality and you can walk around and stuff. Basically second life but with every website.
Lucas Nguyen
Internet 2.0 would just be web 2.0 but worse
Brayden Gray
Fortchads win again
Mason Reyes
and will be absolutely worse than the current net unless it's like futurama or SAO where it jacks into your mind and you have your senses inside the thing.
Eli Brooks
China already does this, and it’s kind of great. Inb4 communism. Ironically, the communist state has taken capitalism to its furthest form. You can elect to have a portion of your paycheck paid out in digital currency, with a rate of 1:1. Even the banks don’t offer you this kind of deal. And you can do everything with their digital money, pay bills, buy real life shit, and even services. Some places don’t even take cash anymore. Now imagine if to shop you didn’t even have to leave your home. 360 cameras allow you to shop and look at goods in real time from a virtual world and you can have them delivered to your place. With 5G, you’ll always be on, and with Epic’s licensing success lately, you can look like anyone you want, as you walk the streets, GPS signals will display your avatar in real time to others. You will literally never stop being connected.
Oliver Jones
If all the normies fuck off to this metaverse, and the old internet returns to the 90's wild west, I'm all for it
Austin Young
The next step for the internet isn't a new internet. It will be classifying the internet as a virtual country. It will be extraterritorial and have its own government with ambassadors to other countries. The internet will become its own legally distinct entity away from the landed ground it's on meaning doing something illegal in like Russia would be able to be prosecuted anywhere else the internet is. You'll be able to claim dual citizenship with "the internet" and it will have its own tax structure, laws, etc.
Owen Mitchell
>soibois dreams into bureaucratic musch Tbh the soibois are doing that just fine without the government doing anything. See Twitter, FB, Reddit, etc.
Chase Morales
>doing something illegal in like Russia would be able to be prosecuted anywhere else the internet is And how do you force Russia to play ball with you?
Thomas Fisher
>You can elect to have a portion of your paycheck paid out in digital currency with a rate of 1:1. Even the banks don’t offer you this kind of deal. And you can do everything with their digital money, your money is already turned into a digital currency if you have a debit card, it's not called that but you can use it online just like you could a digital currency. >pay bills, buy real life shit, and even services. can all be done with a debit card or any number of apps like venmo or apple pay for in store purchases >Some places don’t even take cash anymore there's places in the us that don't take cash either, the only thing they have in china over anywhere else except some other asian countries is their street vendors will take digital payments but i believe vendors in korea also do Now imagine if to shop you didn’t even have to leave your home. 360 cameras allow you to shop and look at goods in real time from a virtual world and you can have them delivered to your place. You can go on amazon and buy any product you want and have it delivered to your house, they don't all have a 360 view but you can see what you're purchasing from the various pictures
Ethan Long
This. Better off waiting for hoverboards and flying cars. Americans can barely get a consistent 20 MBPS across country without cutouts dips and drops.
Jason Johnson
>If all the normies fuck off to this metaverse, and the old internet returns to the 90's wild west, I'm all for it
Why would the "old internet returns" when the likes of google would still retain control that they currently have over this internet? Like... do you even think zoomer?
Bentley Smith
This feels like satire because I figured most developed countries already have that (debit, online banking, e-billing, online delivery), but then again you might be chinese There are attachments and apps that can turn smartphones into card readers that are becoming more and more common with small vendors, though the ones I've seen still use the traditional wireless card readers
Aiden Davis
Imagine having to launch Fortnite to buy something on Amazon.
Alexander Hughes
i've seen the card readers, i know food trucks tend to use them but it's a whole different thing in china. they'll have a qr code on the wall or a paper you scan to pay them and then go on your way. same thing for vending machines.
