What are the best versions of each final fantasy game?
I still like the look of VII just fine. Just play the current release on pc/switch if you're super anal about seeing psx graphics like a bitch.
1&2 - GBA or PSP (the PSP versions are based directly off the GBA versions)
3 - DS or PSP, really your choice of format; iOS version is the same but sloppy UI
4 - it's a toss-up between GBA content, DS remake and rebalancing, or PSP which comes with a makeover and After Years; iOS version is the DS remake with worse UI
5 - GBA for content, though a patched SFC version is fine
6 - the GBA version's sound issues aren't totally fixed even when patched, I recommend Ted Woolsey Uncensored for SNES version
7 - PS1 original, Switch is the best of the modern ports though
8 & 9 - PS1 versions, the ports are kind of bad
10 - PS2 version if you can, but the HD remasters are playable if faulty in artistic decisions
11 - PC obviously
12 - Zodiac Age, allegedly the Switch version has additional tweaks the other ports don't have but ultimately it makes the game vastly more playable thanks to speed-up and actually adds character diversity thanks to the Job System
13 - PC versions of the whole trilogy, if you don't mind their sheer size. Easy to 4K them.
14 - PC obviously.
15 - PC version if you've got the specs, it's kind of a bitchy game and had memory leaks last I checked but it's hands down the best version of the game still
Avoid the iOS versions where possible, they're often more crash-happy and the UI and performance issues as well as "creative liberties" with the art assets are just awful.
What's so bad about it? Works just fine for me.
GBA FF4 is a glitchy mess. PSP, DS, or bust.
What’s wrong with the Super Famicom version of IV?
>fan translations
What’s wrong with the original Japanese ones?
>GBA
Nah fuck that, portables kinda suck
>don’t skip XI
It’s an MMO so i didn’t count it
>Zodiac
Nah there’s a tacked on job system
the steam version of 9 has faster battles so you’re gonna want to play that version
Also adding onto this: there's nothing wrong with playing the NES/FC versions of 1 and 3 with a fan translation on the latter, as the simplicity lends itself a unique charm to these early games. The re-releases and remakes rebalance some things, like 1's magic system going from "limited casts between rests" to MP like later games. 4's SNES version isn't a terrible thing to stick with, but for god's sake at least get it fixed so it's not the censored and challenge-neutered version, Namingway Edition works fine for this alongside its QoL changes like B button dashing. The PS1 versions of 4 and 6 are "okay", though their loading times are atrocious to deal with, but the PS1 localization for 5 is plain garbage, avoid it like the plague.
>What’s wrong with the Super Famicom version of IV?
If you say ‘Super Famicom’ without context he is going to pick up the western NES version of 4
> What’s wrong with the original Japanese ones?
Doubt he can understand Japanese
> Nah fuck that, portables kinda suck
I said GBA translation, which is better than the fan-translation and which you can patch the game with
> Nah there’s a tacked on job system
Most people think the game is vastly better with it
>NES
Snes
