My theory is that she's pulling a Dr. Strange ala endgame. Her Holy materia that "does nothing" actually lets her read the threads of fate or whatever its called thanks to her Cetra lineage. She see's how destiny plays out and the world is ultimately saved even after her death. At the end of the original when the lifestream is stopping meteor, it vaguely looks similar to the time jannies and their tornado shenanigans. Red also stated that they are in fact from the planet too, trying to preserve fate. Sephiroth is also part Cetra and can see what these time jannies/aerith are doing and obviously doesn't like it at all because he sees his own demise at clouds hands. So he attempts to play cloud into fucking with aeriths plan and offers him 7 seconds to change things, knowing it will cause a major course change in fate.
Horribly explained, but there it is. I have no idea where they'll go with part 2.

Okay, so I've just got done with the game. What the fuck was with that over the top ending? The original did things much more subtly. I'd rather just have left Midgar normally than fight destiny incarnate, then Sephiroph, then be confronted by myself.
Don't get me wrong, most of the game was fun, but this seems like some AC level fanfiction tier writing. When I play the second part in one, or two years I'm going to feel like I've already been through the overarching climax of the game already because of how over the top it was.

It's interrupting the flow of the story knowing full well what the characters are well capable of (Cloud finishing Reno off) yet being stopped by a deus ex machina. Now that we supposedly defeated the ghost daddy and Square has seen how much the concept has been shat on we will be free of them.
