I don't think that the things people enjoyed about it are overrated. It has a fun story, great music, a charming and wide cast, and good tone and art direction for an SNES game. Its gameplay is just very weak compared to the game before and the game after.

Terra is the main character, it's just that she's so void of charisma it's almost as if she weren't there.

Sounds like you should play sci-fi FF games. That's about half of them, honestly. Also look at Phantasy Star IV.

Terra is a macguffin character. She's the Milla Jovovich in 5th Element. Locke is the main character, the Bruce Willis.

That isn't IV or IX.

Terra is the protag of the first half, Celes the 2nd, Locke is the deuteragonist. Everyone else is a side character, but great fun.

It doesn't matter who is the main character, because Setzer utterly steals the show.

This, everyone treats it as an underrated masterpiece, and while it is good I wouldn't put it near the top.
The sprites and music are the best things about it.

Most involve magic in some way. In the most "realistic" FFs, they're magic infused grenades (XV) or ghost energy (Spirits Within)

I played it as a kid and I still havent forgotten how sad I was that I basically killed the ninja guy by not waiting for him during the world collapse part.
i really thought that it was the right option to pick, but later I found out that I fucked up.
