3D modelling was on it's infancy back then.
Shitty tools, fucking expensive as hell SGI computers.
This picture comes literally from a sega saturn development guide.
Shit was so bad, the document is mostly a crash course on 3D graphics, so the guys that were until last year drawing sprites could even have a minimal chance of success.

FF8/FF9/Chrono Cross models don't have much more triangles than the FF7 models, but the techniques, they made a fuckton of difference.

It's not just the chibi, all FF7 models are unoptimized messes.
Square took quite a while to learn how to properly make low poly 3D models.
But when they finally did, they got fucking good at it.

They'd look infinitely better without the stupid mouths.

just started playing New Threat, there's some pretty neat changes already, stuff I really didn't expect. Wouldn't recommend it for a first playthrough tho
