OP here, the gameplay is totally serviceable just a little janky. Standard hack and slash stuff that prolly could've used a lock on. The only thing that is dogshit are the sidequests but you can pretty much skip all of them.

Drakengard 1's gameplay is the single least inspired musou/"Dynasty Warriors" you will ever play. It tries to break it up with some aerial dragon combat segments, but these are also pretty soggy.
Drakengard 3 is much better in comparison, but it's still just a janky imitation of like a DmC or something.
2 we don't talk about, Yoko Taro didn't direct that one.

Read or watch a walkthrough on D1 because it's genuinely unpleasant to play and is not fun at all. Drakengard 3 is worth a playthrough but in my opinion it's not as good as either of the Nier entries.

The music is fascinating and I believe it must be what psychopaths and serial killers hear in their minds 24/7.
The gameplay just isn't good at all, and seeing the genuinely fucked up stuff is locked behind a really inane grind. You will have zero fun with it, I truly think it must be some cruel god's intent to bog down such a fascinating experience with such mundane, dry gameplay.
