They cost quite a lot of effort time and resources to make, and they don't drive sales.
Rather they generally kill sales numbers by giving people enough of a fix that they don't then have the rush of hype needed to go out and buy a game on opening day. Yas Forums likes to parrot that it's just because it makes people realise the games are bad, but it seems to affect any game that releases a demo, sales tends to go down from expectations.
So you're spending money to lose money. Why bother?
Nothing, they're still around. You just don't look for them.

With the success of the Xbox Game Pass, they're outdated. Now, you can try the complete game, why would you want to play a demo?
Not too uncommon on Steam
Demos existed in the past packaged with magazines to try and promote games as not everyone had access to the internet, or the bandwidth to stream video. It was a way to get gamers to find out about and get a quick peak of upcoming video games. They aren't necessary anymore from a marketing standpoint.

The fuck is this stupidity.
There are no game demos any more.
Why the fuck would I let people play games for free, when I can charge them for unfinished games in 'early access', and have them playtest and build hype for me.
