How can the devs possibly insist not only that they weren't influenced by Dark Souls (and Bloodborne probably) but even that they hadn't played it (or was it that they hadn't heard of it) when it so blatantly copied so much?

How is Hollow Knight Dark Souls inspired?

>Game is slightly hard and Bosses must mean is a soulslike.
Gamers really think this.

Uhhh...ummmm....
Light and dark or some shit..
Ummm...city place...some knights or shit...
OH BENCHES ARE BONFIRES HOLY FUCK LOOK AT THIS LACK OF CREATIVITY

Hollow Knight is so much better than any Souls game it's not even funny.
Maybe FromSoft can copy HK and Elden Ring might actually be a good game?

The sequel to this game better have good movement mechanics right from the start. It looks and sounds fantastic but god damned, it's so boring to walk until you get the dash and double jump. This is a sin in any metroidvania.

It is strange. There's nothing wrong with being influenced by another game. Why deny it?

really, you need to ask?

>'hollow' beings like in dark souls, literally in the fucking title
>setting is a collapsed kingdom past its prime
>dark and gloomy mood in that setting
>visual style of the game for a great part is like an amalgamation of dark souls and bloodborne styles
>sparse/cryptic plot that you can piece together if you care or not if you don't
>labyrinthine/looping level design
>but also open and allowing you explore it on your own terms
>lose all souls/geo upon death but can go back to place of death to recover it
>benches are kind of like bonfires/lanterns
>friendly (or not) npcs that appear in places across the map that you will meet again and again in different places as you progress
>infection in hk like undead curse in ds
>similar types of endings and requirements to achieve the endings in the games
>considerable focus on boss fights
>muh difficulty (some say (though i personally disagree that either of them are difficult))

the notable difference is pretty much just that dark souls is a lot more combat focused and customisable, while hollow knight is focused more on platforming and player dexterity
sure, one by one those points can apply to a whole bunch of games and don't really mean anything, but when you collect all of those together, not to mention that there's probably a bunch that i failed to mention, the similarity is quite great

some people really think dark souls invented checkpoints and grimdark aesthetic
let that sink in

yeah I mean I'm not even complaining about the similarities between them, but rather about why the devs need to lie about it

way to ignore everything else and even the point that specifically addresses this, honestly bravo, simply bravo

I don't even really disagree, but about half of what you listed are Metroidvania genre conventions and not something Dark Souls had invented.

this game is such an overrated piece of shit I'm tired of retards claiming this game is the best thing ever

the combat is boring and the platforming sucks

didn't say it was invented by ds, but i repeat again that i am talking about the complete package of similarities

These things have been around way longer than Dark Souls.
You are just like the journalists that die on the first level and immediately post "IS THIS LE DARK SOULS OF THE GENRE??"
Go have an original thought and then FUCK OFF

what do you want me to say when this game is labelled as a metroidvania
as in metroid + castlevania ?
where all the inspiration came from I wonder huh.
then again you probably weren't born when sotn came out

...

My guess is they didn't want to get stuck with the increasingly prevalent "Souls-like" description

fuck how many times to do i have to fucking repeat myself

Again though, it's really no as clean-cut as you're trying to push it, when many of these have been part of the genre for significantly longer than Dark Souls had existed.

yes but all things taken into account i still think the games are just too similar for the devs to be able to claim that it's a coincidence

You can't tell me that the watcher knights aren't a dark souls reference to the abyss watchers.

>'hollow' beings like in dark souls, literally in the fucking title
If you're going to push similarities, it's probably a good idea not to go full retard on the first one. Undeads eventually losing humanity and becoming mindless husks =/= empty beings purposely created for containment

That much I can agree on, but you're going at it from the weird way of taking Dark Souls and making a platformer of it, when it's more like taking the genre and adding elements from another game. It's borderline undeniable that there was some influence there, but it's also borderline silly to try and claim that genre conventions that had existed for literal decades now would not come to the devs' mind without Dark Souls.

the amount of zoomers thinking dark souls invented all those things.
The only thing hollow knight and dark souls have in common is the dark fantasy setting and having to do a corpse run when you die.
Hollow Knight plays nothing like a soulslike, so i can see the devs being tired of the game being called "dark souls with bugs", which can feel like fake advertisment (and considering the amount of souls babies filtered by this game i can see why)

forgot to mention also similarities in the areas of the game
you've got your annoying poison swamp area, you've got your area of total darkness, you've got your crystal caves, you've got your deep dark ancient depths below the kingdom, you've got your mad academics and academies out in the gardens/woods/whatevers, you've got your peaks and you've got your castles, you've got your cities at the core and you've got your distant peripheries

A thought experiment: if Dark Souls had released AFTER Hollow Knight, would people have claimed that Dark Souls was influenced by Hollow Knight?

the real question is: how can Ori 2 devs insist they weren't inspired by hollow knight?

suuuuuuuuure

>you've got your area of total darkness, you've got your crystal caves
Oh shit Rayman 1 was retroactively inspired by Dark Souls. How could I have been so blind?

Australian game devs are shit. the whole country is so untalented when it comes to game development
