I'm a lifelong consolefag that is finally switching to a PC for next gen, and I have a few questions: 1) Do you have any advice on getting the most of my budget, or what's different about playing on PC in general? 2) Does anyone feel like commenting on my build before I go ahead with it? pcpartpicker.com/list/3vR9Xv 3) I'm looking for a 2 TB HDD to add to this for extra storage, do you have any recs?
Finally, do you think it'll keep pace with a next-gen console? Sorry for the complete newfag questions, but it's hard to understand the wide range of details on PC specs, and I would like it if anyone helped.
I don't think you really need 3600mhz RAM. Go with some Team T-Group 16GB 3200MHZ and shave off an extra $20 As for storage, it doesn't really matter what brand

Im no expert but generally I hear people like to stick to the same types for CPU/GPU combos, instead of mixing and matching intel and amd.
Chase Ortiz
AMD GPUs are shit. AMD CPU + NVIDIA GPU is the way to go nowadays
Noah Gray
meh, I just went intel/intel
Sebastian Hill
it's fine for a midranger
Camden Reed
Don't listen to the AMD fanboyism going here. Intel is way more expensive but it will give you way better performance.
I fell for the AMD meme when I build my current rig and while it has served me well for almost six years I could done better.
Logan Sanchez
>intel/intel The new Intel GPUs aren't even out yet. Are you running integrated graphics in 2020?
Thanks. Is HDD failure a meme? I've heard some brands are less reliable than others.
Brandon Roberts
>almost six years >being a Bulldozer user

Don’t do it it’s a giant meme and you’ll always be autistically fidgeting with settings instead of actually playing. Just stick with the new Xbox or ps

More like Piledriver; I had to emergency replace my computer (an electrical surge damaged my old system and due to work and college-related issues I couldn't afford to be without a PC for a long time) and Piledriver was Yas Forums's main suggestion at the time. Even most of the same anti-Intel arguments we see today were present back then.
If you're not in a hurry wait for the fall. AMD is releasing their 4000 series CPUs and most likely we'll see new GPUs from Nvidia, AMD and maybe even Intel.
For $20 you might as well keep the 3600. That's literally nothing.
For HDDs you can google the model abit to see if it has major flaws but mostly HDDs are kinda solid.

What are you going to be playing on; a monitor, tv? Any 4k capability? If so, shoot for a 1080Ti

The only way you're going to consistantly beat AMD right now is if you buy the best intel CPU on the market. They're around the same level of power in the mid-range tomshardware.com/reviews/amd-ryzen-5-3600-review,6287-5.html It didn't work. Everything that fit AM3+ socket was garbage
Julian Torres
>The only way you're going to consistantly beat AMD right now is if you buy the best intel CPU on the market. They're around the same level of power in the mid-range That was exactly what Yas Forums told me back in 2014. I don't plan to upgrade from my FX6300 at least for another two years (unless something happens) but when I do I'm going intel.
Brandon Perry
Is Logicalincrements still a viable guide?
Owen Evans
>literally link benchmarks >but I'm still going intel! Fuck it. You do whatever you want.
Anthony Wood
>Im no expert When you know this then you really should just shut the fuck up.
>he fell for FX Not a surprise you don't like AMD. No reason to be a fanboy though. My old cpu was intel and my new cpu is amd. Absolutely no regrets. The fact is AMD has crazy good budget option with the 3600 and much better multicore performance on the high tier CPUs. They might lose by a couple fps in gaming to the 9900k but that's about it.

next gen consoles will outperform 90% of current pcs. The only thing that will outperform them will be next gen top of the line pcs for several thousand dollars.
John Diaz
>next gen consoles will outperform 90% of current pcs. >this is what consolefags believe Absolutely hilarious.

There are other reasons I'd like to switch. My main computer is a Dell laptop from 2013, and browser alone tends to use the majority of the memory. W10 still runs fine on this thing but if I want to use Photoshop or work in a DAW, it's a chore, and it crashes quite often. 7 years is a good run for a laptop I think, so I don't think it's unreasonable to spend this money on a sturdy machine, and get a video card so I don't need to get a PS5 or Xbox SeX for next gen. I'm not in a hurry, but what's the motivation? A few price drops I imagine but I'm not on a hard budget. 1080p monitor, I don't see the big deal with 4k really. Do you guys like it that much?
Samuel Rodriguez
First post to make me genuinely laugh today. Great job, user. >I don't see the big deal with 4k really. Do you guys like it that much? It's not worth the dip in framerate
Benjamin King
It happens every console release >dumb fucking monkeys who can barely operate a microwave are suddenly knowledgeable because they repeat bullshit press release material
Jonathan Campbell
>I'm not in a hurry, but what's the motivation? A few price drops I imagine but I'm not on a hard budget. Don't listen to that retard; this is a trap PC gamers fall on when they're looking at upgrade their systems
>I'm going to upgrade >Wait, no! wait six months for the latest ______ >okay >six months later >I'm going to upgrade >Wait, no! wait five months for the latest ______ >okay >I'm going to upgrade >Wait, no! wait seven months for the latest ______ >okay >Repeat ad infinitum, at the end user doesn't upgrade your machine.
If you plan to build a machine, don't wait; you already waited seven years. Look at the best component (on a price / performance balance) available right now and go for them.
Lucas Nelson
Now is quite possibly the worst time to get a high end GPU/CPU just so you know. Big Navi and Nvidia Ampere as well as Ryzen 400 processors are coming out by September and the price of whatever GPU you end up buying is going to be significantly lower.

Don't do it user

>1) Do you have any advice on getting the most of my budget, or what's different about playing on PC in general?
Honestly, the biggest thing you will want to decide is what resolution you want to play games at and what processor you want. Like say for example you only have a 1080p monitor, you don't need to get top of the line crap if you don't intent to upgrade to 1440p or 4K.
My advise? Choose a budget you are comfortable with and go from there. You do not need to get anything fancy your first build. Just don't cheap out on the CPU, case, fans, or the motherboard. Don't go hog wild with customization or stuff like watercooling, just do something basic to start. Take your time, and don't feel bad about looking up youtube tutorials on stuff if you are unsure. Run temperature tests to make sure your build is not an oven and don't bother with overclocking your first time around unless you have prior skill with it.
Not bad. I'm not the biggest fan of the case though, it looks cramped and the airflow does not look the best. I would maybe switch to a 2060 super or even a 2070 super if you have the budget for it (assuming you don't wait for the next gen of cards and want to do 1440p with no issues). RAM looks fine, and the CPU will be decent for most things. I would defiantly buy a heatsink and not rely on the one that comes with AMD CPUs, the Hyper 212 is a decent one that won't break the bank.
3) I'm looking for a 2 TB HDD to add to this for extra storage, do you have any recs?
Can't go wrong with WD Blue, they are decent and on average about $60 bucks for 2TB.
Gavin Edwards
>what's the motivation You get more performance for the same money. But it really depends on what you want. It's not a bad time to upgrade but we WILL get new product lines later this year unless corona fucks up things big time. It's still 4-6 months away so it's up to you.
>4k It's a meme. Go for 1080p 144hz variable refreshrate if you want a new monitor.
And every time they get absolutely btfo'd when their brand new console performs like an 5 year old mid tier PC.
