I think I grew up at the worst time for liking Japanese video games.

After the compelling experiences I had with MW2, Halo 3, Dead Space, Red Dead and Alan Wake, I couldn't find a game with less to contribute in any department than Final Fantasy 13.
Only recently, have I started to become interested in Japanese games again.
Although, I will still never buy another Square Enix game.

Combat-wise, yeah, 100% agreed. The exploration of KH1 felt much better though, especially since you didn't need to grind Forms to reach places.
On the other hand, "vastly better story" only in Kingdom Hearts terms. It's still average at best.

Of course, I replay it every year.
The HD version has pretty much replaced it, though, with the Final Mix improvements as well as a good bunch of quality of life changes.
Feels good to have KH1 as a favourite game.

If they had just had predesigned levels instead of the stupid room card system it would have been a lot better. The story and combat are pretty great besides that. I can't speak on the topic of the PS2 remake, but I can't imagine it captures the experience of the original.

The story is awful what are you talking about? You literally go through KH1 but worse and the story progresses when you're outside the worlds. The story itself is lame, Sora is confused throughout and bad guys spout some BS before either fucking off or dying. The only good thing about com is that you get new boss fights but even those can be experienced better in KH2FM, so all that's left for com is that you just have to have a basic grasp of what the fuck has happened so you don't go into KH2 all confused like all of us did when we were kids

I just beat 1, and and replaying through 2 for the first time since it was originally released. I remember absolutely nothing from this game. The story is terrible, every fuckj for character unlikeable, and the combat sucks dick too. The gooks should never have been given free reign.

I like ff13, but the open part is awful bullshit. And the level itself is the only bad looking level in the game. It feels like the game was already done and then a week before release the manager said "we need a open world part, because kids love it nowadays".
Final Fantasy is mediocre series. It's only popular because of FF7 being groundbreaking 20 years ago. Go play better jrpgs, like Tales Of, Persona, Dragon Quest or Grandia.

Squeenix got too big and lost the proper communication between different teams, their execs care more about graphical flair and marketing rather than gameplay, Nomura became deluded and now cares more about his aborted project than KH and its fans, Disney became overprotective of their properties and only see KH as free marketing and the Osaka Team just flat-out sucks at making games.

tried going back to play it recently and it felt pretty obsolete desu, 2 and 3 refined the gameplay to the point i cant handle playing kh1 anymore, the worlds are also much bigger and theres more to do in them now.
story wise its the most coherent and straight forward plot but i never gave a shit about story in KH, the series has always been more of a theme park type thing imo.
