You haven't played the original game or you completely misread the character.
Aerith is extroverted and flirtacious, whereas Tifa was demure and shy, even though their character designs and jobs are typically the other way around. That's the exact effect that sakamoto was going for, to turn those character archetypes of the demure white mage and the spunky tomboy fighter on their heads. It's part of the reason Aerith and Tifa have had uncharacteristic longevity as far as Final Fantasy waifus go.

I've always found it ironic how people say that Tifa x Cloud is more genuine when it was and is built entirely on him wanting to be a chad to win the popular girl every guy wants and she wants him to be a chad to live up to her expectations (she only grows out of this a bit by the end of the game). Meanwhile Aerith x Cloud literally starts out as a farce because Aerith only sees her dead boyfriend in him and he is interested in her because of the stories Zack told him, but Aerith makes a genuine effort to know the "real" Cloud and would've broken through far sooner than Tifa ever did if only her life didn't end prematurely.

The characterization for everyone is spot on and done quite well, incredibly faithful to the original japanese version of the game.
The game is also strikingly gorgeous when there's not constant texture pop-in due to PS4 hardware.
It's the hours and hours of padding the game out with long, boring hallway sections that drag the game down.

Well yeah, they are the two prominent waifus. Yuffie comes later but still probably gets more fanart than most other FF girls. Keep in mind that FFVII was for a long time, and probably still is, treated as one of the greatest games of all time.

Polls are hard to sell since there are a lot of factors involved, neverminding that most prominent polls are done in Japan where a certain type of vote tends to be the most prominent. But I'll admit that I can't speak as much for Japan. However on this side it's always been Tifa this, Tifa that, while Aerith was mainly remembered for dying.
