What is a decent router to purchase for gaming? Not sure if it even makes a difference, however I currently am going off of my roommates Motorola router, and were unable to play a lot of different games. I realize all of this can probably be solved with port forwarding, however he doesn't want to go into any of the settings. He tells me that I'll need to spend around 175 on a new router, but I think he just doesn't want me to get a new one so I can set it up. Wasn't sure if I should post this here, or on /g/.
Sorry it's borderline blogpost, also pic unrelated, but it is another Motorola router.

self bump. pic related, I really want to experience this online.

>however he doesn't want to go into any of the settings
Maybe he should stop being a mouthbreathing retard then.

Definitely a /g/ post, but I'm bored. How much actual bandwidth do you have? If you have some third world shit like 20Mbps you're not going to do shit with a new router. Also check what actual wireless protocol your router and adapters are set to. If it's not at least 802.11n, you're not doing shit in 2020. $175 for a router is pretty comical, unless you're doing some actual in-home file sharing.

Lastly, have you tried connecting straight to the modem/router? Hardwired will always BTFO wireless.

That isn't going to happen anytime soon. He says if we open the ports, "the Chinese will get all our info".
I just want to play games online.

This dumb fuck doesn't know what he's talking about. I don't know what makes a "gaming router", but I've worked in networking a few years and I don't know about routers that will do everything you want magically out of the box. They have to be configured for certain shit.

We have decent speeds, I get around 500 mbps down, and about 20 up. Examples of games not working include: Smash Ultimate, Animal Crossing, MHGU. These are on Switch, where my NAT type is stuck at F.
As for Playstation, Call of Duty Modern Warfare won't work entirely, along with Black Out.

After doing some research, a new router and handling the settings myself seems to be the only solution.

Forgot to mention, Switch is via wifi, Playstion and PC are wired in.

the one where you plug the cord into it

Then yeah, your boy is actively fucking you over. Still $175 for a router is overkill. I think the Nighthawks are around $100 now and that should be plenty for you. Just make sure you're on a different channel so your faggot roommate doesn't cause interference.

Will do, I actually was looking at a Nighthawk that was priced at 189 actually.

Thanks for the input everyone.

just connect your pc with an ethernet cable and do some port forwarding on your isp provided gateway

I don't need the admin password and login? That's all in his name.

mine has a code on a sticker on the side. for comcast, the user name is usually admin, and the password is usally password

I'll see about checking it out. It's his own router that he says is better than the Comcast one. The Comcast bill is in his name, so I'm trying to do as much as I am able to do.

sg1100

he probaly didn't put the comcast gateway into bridge mode. it has to be in bridge more or you will get conflicting ip addresses, causesing problems

will look into it, thanks.
I'll see if I can try having a conversation about it when he wakes up, but I don't think it'll get anywhere.

Back in ~2009, I went from knowing fuckall about routers to setting one up to play Demon's Souls with my buddies. I got a Buffalo-brand router that has held up for years off and on, and I used some tomato-something (google it) firmware. Easy shit to set up.
Your roommate is retarded and lying to your face. Fuck him.

I did this when I was 15 or 16 to get Terraria to work via Hamachi to play with my buddies. It's insanely easy to fix, however I don't think I have access to the settings.

doesn't matter, just dont use wifi. go CABLE.

This is the only acceptable setup for shared living environments, OP.
Anything less is not welcome on Yas Forums.

>ask for decent router
>posts DOCSIS modem

>router for gaming
kek

>double NAT

based retard

But that's a modem.
>Not building your own Pfsense router.

docsis 3.1 here

1gbit speeds fuckin rule

tahts a modem/router combo that literaly every cable ISP gives you

also if the ISP refuses to put their shit router into bridge mode you can't even ue your own router

>tfw 200mbit fiber only
Need to upgrade all my network at home but >Brazil
Even a fucking 802.11AC router from 4 years ago is expensive.
Got an Archer C6 and a C7, need to replace an old TPLINK 849n then i'll be set for gigabit on the entire house at least.
Then it'll be outdated because 10Gbps is already a thing JUST KILL ME

just log into the router and port forward, it's not hard

>connects via ssh n steals your personal data
nuthin personal

Technically you can, but you'll have to use a static ip on it and place it on the modem/router DMZ.
And enjoy Double NAT

not using DS LITE

if you plug a router into another router, you will be behind NAT twice (double NAT) and have worse issues, you can plug it into a LAN port and just set it up as another access point, tho
reminder that only channels 1, 6, and 11 don't interfere with each other

this desu, it's probably already a double NAT situation

10G is probably another 10 years out. I mean it's getting cheaper compared to when I looked at it in 2018, but for home use it's still overkill.

>reminder that only channels 1, 6, and 11 don't interfere with each other
for rela? applies to 5ghjz too?

>wireless

Fuck off. Knock the router into modem mode and fix up your own switchgear yourself. I'm quite a fan of Draytek kit when it's absolutely necessary to do wireless, but my primary machines are on copper. DNS/DHCP and other bits are on the server.

I was stuck with ADSL2+ for fucking 10 years, don't remind me.

it's p useful now so you can just run 1 CAT6 and have it backhaul 10x 1gbit devices on a cheap 10Gb uplink switch (a few hundo $)

currently on ds lite with docsis 3.1 it's okay but not having full 100mb/s all the time is a bit annoying

>he doesn't now how to vlan or has pleb-tier shit that doesn't support it

Oh you mean IPv6 Dual Stack.
Right now i'm on IPV4 only, my shitty fiber ISP doesn't have IPV6 infrastructure.
The worst part is that they place you on CGNAT by default unless you complain.

>dualstack
yeah, ipv6 outwards locally ipv4 working with a vpn for work is a bit of a pita with ipv6 sadly

>3 routers on a home network

is this a pic form a /g/ humor thread?

No NAT.

Oh I thought you were talking 10G to every client. I mean right now 10G is really only useful if you're hosting a server.

I work as IT Support for a fairly large company, during this coronavirus shit we placed everyone on homeoffice. Man, i think VPN summed for more than 90% of the support tickets. People with shitty routers, shitty ISPS, both, having all kinds of issue to connect to the VPN...

There are 23 non-overlapping channels at 5GHz, as opposed to just 3 at 2.4GHz

That requires trusting the other party not to mess with your shit.

feel you also working in IT peoples home infrastructure and ISPs aint meant to be used for those kind of situations at least not now

I think people will start to seriously talk about ISPs being regulated like utilities going forward.

as if things wont change like at all once this is almost over

Or with a pfsense box you just give other person view rights and not admin rights.

redpill me on pfsense

i always wanted to make one but the fact that you need a PC and run in 24/7consuming at least 50W of power is kinda cringe for me

also don't tell me to get a pi, i have a 1Gbps connection

>Not trusting someone but connecting to their network

I shiggy diggy.

that's like $60 per year user

It depends on what you want to do. If you want to run IDS (intrusion detection) on your pfsense box then you'll need a beefy box. I massively overengineered my box. I ended up putting a 2010 Xeon 4core in a 1U case (don't do this) and ended up having to drill exhaust holes above the CPU cooler because a 45W CPU is too hot for a 1U case.

I would tell you to look at serverbuilds.net. That's where I got my idea from. If you want to build a rack mountable pfsense build I'd reccomend looking at getting an akasa galieo case and a laptop grade cpu.

PFsense itself is pretty easy to use once you get to the GUI, but you'll need to know networking topics like VLANs, NAT, Firewall rules, etc. It's really a business grade router, but if you're looking at going into the IT field it'd be great for cutting your teeth.

does anyone sell a beefy low power router that can run pfsense?

just use some old/spare PC parts user, also I run a plex server/NAS/seedbox on it so it's all wasted electricity anyway

nah, i live in a small apartment and the fact that i need to listen to a PC running 24/7 would make me kill myself

I mean you could buy a Quotom It's fanless and silent.

can you put a second NIC in that tiny shit tho?
