What is a decent router to purchase for gaming? Not sure if it even makes a difference, however I currently am going off of my roommates Motorola router, and were unable to play a lot of different games. I realize all of this can probably be solved with port forwarding, however he doesn't want to go into any of the settings. He tells me that I'll need to spend around 175 on a new router, but I think he just doesn't want me to get a new one so I can set it up. Wasn't sure if I should post this here, or on /g/.
Sorry it's borderline blogpost, also pic unrelated, but it is another Motorola router.

Maybe he should stop being a mouthbreathing retard then.

Definitely a /g/ post, but I'm bored. How much actual bandwidth do you have? If you have some third world shit like 20Mbps you're not going to do shit with a new router. Also check what actual wireless protocol your router and adapters are set to. If it's not at least 802.11n, you're not doing shit in 2020. $175 for a router is pretty comical, unless you're doing some actual in-home file sharing.

Lastly, have you tried connecting straight to the modem/router? Hardwired will always BTFO wireless.

That isn't going to happen anytime soon. He says if we open the ports, "the Chinese will get all our info".
I just want to play games online.

This dumb fuck doesn't know what he's talking about. I don't know what makes a "gaming router", but I've worked in networking a few years and I don't know about routers that will do everything you want magically out of the box. They have to be configured for certain shit.

We have decent speeds, I get around 500 mbps down, and about 20 up. Examples of games not working include: Smash Ultimate, Animal Crossing, MHGU. These are on Switch, where my NAT type is stuck at F.
As for Playstation, Call of Duty Modern Warfare won't work entirely, along with Black Out.

After doing some research, a new router and handling the settings myself seems to be the only solution.

Forgot to mention, Switch is via wifi, Playstion and PC are wired in.

the one where you plug the cord into it

Then yeah, your boy is actively fucking you over. Still $175 for a router is overkill. I think the Nighthawks are around $100 now and that should be plenty for you. Just make sure you're on a different channel so your faggot roommate doesn't cause interference.
