>best late area.
It's not a late area, you can go there literally after the asylum, or realistically mid-game after killing Sif.

DS2 had the most color and interesting environments but god the enemy design sucked
Yes b-team I want to fight human with sword as 90% of the enemies
Go watch Mauler’s extensive critique on this game. He’ll tell you everything you need to know about DSII.
Specifically?
Demon Ruins
Lost Izalith
Even the Duke's Archive shows areas where it was rushed.
The catacombs and Tomb of the Giants used darkness as a cope to make a simple, quick environment.
Even Anor Londo showed signs of being rushed... just make everything big and spaced out...
Late as in when you're "supposed" to go though it.

FTFY user.
Not that guy, but I'd go with something like this. Maybe put Duke's Archive down a level, couldn't really decide.
There are many many many many MANNNYYY problems with DS2 both vanilla and SOTFS.
But what it gets right, it gets very right. The mood of the game is the absolute best of the series.
But what i really want to emphasive is the story.
DS1 set the groundwork but DS2 with scholar is the height of it all.
And then DS3 came along and shit the bed with gwyn wanking.
If the abyss ring and actually getting there wasn't so fucking convoluted, sure. I don't know how you're meant to know to equip the ring and fall without looking it up.
Idk but ds3 is arguably one of the greatest console games I've ever played
