I don't see a lot of sequels that put direct parallels to pretty much every single major plot beat. Regardless, you can read their post about what they were getting at. Makes enough sense to me.

But MGS2's parallels are frequently matched by even more drastic divergences. Even the conscious parallels are used to different ends, which is the whole point. Calling MGS2 a reimagining is disingenuous, because the whole point of the game is doing something different -- and it does, on more or less every level.
