How the fuck did we go from a fast paced "shoot it till it dies" while dodging enemy attacks, and having some items laying around

too shoot it till it starts glowing and have .250 of a second to decide on getting HP/armor/ammo.

oops I accidentally shot the demon one too many times with the machinegun or plasma rifle and it died so I cant glory kill for a meaningfull amount of health.

oops I didn't research before playing the game and use some optimized broken build and cheese with the flamehook SSG.

it's not a perfect game, anyone who says so is in denial. i'm almost done with it and would give at an 8/10 on a good day. before the release I ended up playing a bunch of old late 90's shooters just to get me in the mood, and playing them reminded me of how good they were when they came out and how some still hold up. Doom eternal is a different beast entirely, it just ain't fun until near the end and to me that's a cardinal sin of FPS design.

I love classic Doom and also Eternal. Both are all about movement but Eternal obviously forces you to manage resources in a different and specific way in using the enemies. I like the general level design and flow of classic Doom and even Doom 2016, Eternals levels can be kinda mediocre, but once you get the gist of the gameplay and how to handle the chainsaw and flame belch and weapon switching and dodging it's really fun, it's like an actiongame-FPS, I just wished the level design and structure was more like classic Doom.

doom eternal (and 2016) do not share a lot with the old school doom games. i don't think that's a controversial statement. classic doom is basically a corridor shooter.
gameplay-wise, the new doom games are more similar to quake (also made by id). nu-doom draws inspiration from the original games, like enemy design and behavior, some lore elements, etc.
it's very different though. it feels like an arcade game. it's not "old doom" but it's not bad.
if you want games that look and play very closely to old doom (or quake), they exist. stuff like "amid evil" and "dusk" are very well reviewed, and as someone who played a lot of old school doom/quake/unreal, it feels good in the same way that those games did.

I only like Doom 3. The original is too dated to enjoy now (running around shitty mazes that all look the same for some keycards?) but 3 still holds up.

If you want to play classic Doom then play classic Doom and stop bitching about the franchise evolving over 20 years.
