None of us knew what we were doing so the doomguy just ran around in circles while we spammed demons at him until he died.

it's because they took the feedback of 2016 multiplayer being garbage and decided it meant "deathmatch is totally played out, daddyo. we want new innovative game modes, not standard modes but made well"

If Quake Champions wasn't poorly made abandonware they could've easily made a crossover event between the two to cover for the lack of Deathmatch. Something like what happened with Halo Reach when Halo Anniversary released. A new Doomguy champ, a fuckload of DOOM Eternal maps, etc.
Of course consolefags would be left out, but I don't consider people that play shooters with a controller to be human so it doesn't really matter in the end.

Their thoughts were that nobody would care about a regular deathmatch mode, so why bother? 2016's multiplayer was panned, and nobody plays arena shooters.
Battle Mode is a risk, but it would have more of a chance of people caring about it than a normal deathmatch mode.
Battlemode is more fun than 2016's dogshit MP. Play QC if you want a modern arena MP game.
At the end of the day you just can't make a classic deathmatch for this game because of the simultaneous console release. Since you can't slow time for everyone on the server every time a player pulls out the weapon wheel, you're stuck with the standard boring-ass two weapon limit from literally every other slow as fuck console FPS. The lackluster (but admittedly gorgeous) multiplayer that Certain Affinity shat out in 2016 was basically the best you could do given that fundamental limitation.

There was nothing wrong with 2016 MP apart of Loadouts.
Don't need a weapon wheel, just "next/previous weapon" buttons. If you're picking up more than say 4 weapons in a single life then you've probably already won.
The idea is to try and find a way to bring Single Player combat and apply it to multiplayer
It's beyond fucked that doom Eternal and 2016 don't have co-op. if not the campaign there should at least be an endless wave Horde mode in the depths of hell

Get rid of loadouts and put weapons on the map. That instantly makes it playable. After that it just needs tweaks.

I think most of the hate came from the fact that the single player was a massive breath of fresh air compared to other shooters that were out a the time and then the multiplayer was completely uninspired. Made it look worse in comparison

This mode is fine, but it was absolutely a mistake for it to be the only one they included. The standard fare should have been in as well. It's crazy to say, but they should look at last year's Modern Warfare as an example of how to do multiplayer. That game has like 20 modes and all of them are equally as fleshed out and polished. It has something for everyone and as a result does not get stale because of how much variety there is. This mode is fun but will not be populated or interesting in a week. This kind of mode always dies off fast as nothing more than a minor novelty that most people only play for a couple of days before moving on. Same thing will happen to Resident Evil 3's multiplayer in the next couple weeks.
That's just the reality of it. You either make the weapon limit two and make one controller button switch between them, or you make the weapon limit 4 and have them use the D-Pad. Anything else takes too long to work in a fast paced multiplayer game.
Again, people that player shooters with a controller have brains smoother than polished marble.

I did think it was really weird that the game starts with the Doomguy having a spaceship without them explaining why, but then I stopped caring.

I knew full well that they were dropping deathmatch, but I thought that this was going to be players invading other people's campaigns. What I wanted the most out of multiplayer was for them to have improved SnapMap. The removal of snapmap when everything else has been upgraded so much really hurts my soul and the general longevity of the game.

SnapMap was just a sad attempt to help people cope with the fact that they were releasing a DOOM game without modding.
It was basically just there to pay lip service to Carmack's old ideal of welcoming mods and open sourcing.

An avatar or blank slate does not have a backstory with characterization. A blank slate is just that, a character you mold with your own choices. It's nothing grandiose but Doomguy is not a blank slate.

Pain elemental is the least fucking fun demon to fight. Players are either hovering constantly out of range or keeping that fucking shield up 100% of the time. Needs to be rebalanced
