Few things:

1. Every game is derivative. They may have been expecting that you've seen this mechanic in another game before. I know I had.

2. Knowing that striking something while airborn gives you a small push away from the enemy + knowing that you can strike downward = "I wonder if I can bounce off of enemies for a little extra air time"

3. You've likely accidentally done this to a common enemy in your normal gameplay. Something rushed at you and you jumped over it, swinging at it as you went over. You pogo'd, you just didn't pay attention to (or didn't remember) what happened.

You'd actually have to be braindead to get to this very early part of the game and not at least try to pogo off the spikes, especially if you learn you can downward slash in mid air. Practically everyone who gets to this part figures that out

Overcharming. But Overcharming is not useful outside of possible no hit runs/attempts.
Pogo is just 1+1=2, since:
1. Early areas have shitload of breakable clutter that is background objects
2. You have direction inputs for looking up/down alongside walking, giving you indication of possible mechanical interaction
3. You have directional inputs for inputting magic

If you don't even try to attack downwards when jumping, you might have brain problems. You certainly want to attack upwards in a lot of cases as well.

Its not terribly useful either.

I think Pogo might be the most natural mechanic in the game since:
1. You bounce of when you hit something, up, down and forward
2. This includes clutter, enemies and spikes. You bounce backwards for hitting spikes with your blade, just like enemies
3. You have actual mechanics for looking up/down, while in movement. Including animations
4. If you haven't found it by the time you get the Up or Down spells, you have brain problems. Its that simple
5. You bounce off a shitload of invincible enemies

You literally cannot reach the mushrooms without knowing about it
If you never used it after the first 10 seconds of the game that fault is on you
