Let's settle this ones and for all.

Are localizations permitted, or should TLs be as literal as possible?

Nothing wrong with proper localization but it seems like nowadays translaters cant help themselves and just shove as many memes in as possible.

>nowadays

It's always been this way, people have just are just sensitive to it now.

It's not as if there are only two extremes. It's possible to have a good translation without hacking the original script apart.

Because we're more aware of the original now. We never really knew back then.

Literal translations are shit but there's a fine line between keeping the meaning while making the dialogue interesting and going full retard like this.

>memes
god, I wish it was just memes.
NISA changed a shonen jump reference into a "LOL DRUMPF" joke.
Persona 5 and the gay scene being changed because some people are softer than a marshmallow, same for judgement's english dub.

People now use media to push agenda's instead of just translating it, same has been happening in the anime sphere since GG.

is Randy a man or a waifu?

If you're paying more attention to minor script tidbits and changes in a game rather than the overall package and how much fun you're having with it, odds are you never really liked video games in the first place.

It was a range. You had reasonable examples, and the the dog excrement that Working Designs put out that was half made up on the spot and pop culture references that aged horribly

Monica Rial needs to jump off a cliff. Jamie Marchi can follow her too, they're the main people who started this trend in anime with Prison School and now it's spread to games.

actually localizing is fine, but just adding jokes where there weren't any in the original is not

Attached: Esty Dee.jpg (2379x562, 921.91K)

you haven't read a book since highschool

That's not localisation, it's reddit humor

They should translate it properly damn it. When I hear character's saying "Rean Schwarzer" I want it to be translated as "REAN", not "Brother" not "Azure knight". FUCK YOU faggots who don't understand it.

Attached: 1567182367863.jpg (982x709, 193.37K)

It's fine if you add in a few different words or flavor text BUT you keep the same general tone of the character and still give off the same meaning.

for example
>Literal text
Wow, that guy is big!
>localized text
>Wow! that dude is huge!

Thats fine.

>Literal translation
Yeah, and stay out! *leaves scene*
>"""localized""" text
Shieeet nigga, I'mma yeet myself outta diz joint like being Sparta Kicked! Fuck, I want me some pancakes now! *leaves scene*

Not fine in the slightest.

>If you're paying more attention to minor script tidbits and changes in a game rather than the overall package and how much fun you're having with it, odds are you never really liked video games in the first place.
But I notice it when I'm watching anime as well

Unacceptable. The game, including the dialogue, should be judge on the developer's vision, not on the "translation" some college drop out decided to insert, thinking he is sticking it to the man. If the original is vapid, so be it, it's not a translator's job to prop it up.

Either is fine, if they convey the meaning. The trouble comes when localization takes excessive liberty with what the meaning is. Even going as far as claiming a western audience wouldn't understand the original meaning at all so the whole scene and context had to be changed. In any case, every commercial localization sucks, so pirate them if you're too lazy to learn nip.

>Lloyd say ''...'' or* *sigh*
>text is two sentence long
Why they do that?

>NISA changed a shonen jump reference into a "LOL DRUMPF" joke

lol what? What's the original context/scene?

Don't play geoshit's translation.

I don't understand and its not just geotrash im talking about here shit like that happen all the time.

They're trying to be writers. Nothing good can happen from it.

As a Spanish-English translator myself, this makes me angry. We're taught to make a long research on the subject we're going to translate, things like what the target audience has come to expect are to be respected, and one should never, under no circumstances, change the original message, we should not be in charge of censorship nor should we try and "interpretate" what the author meant. Localization itself is not wrong, but it should not be confused with whatever the fuck OP posted.

Why do people who defend this shit think you need to choose between these fucking meme localizations and literal google translate?

Anime subs seem to do just fine. It's only games that get this treatment.

They said they wanted to give everyone an X-seed type of translation

I don't remember anyone in sky talking like a twitter nigger.

>Even going as far as claiming a western audience wouldn't understand the original meaning at all so the whole scene and context had to be changed
I will never stop seething at how they handled FFXIV.
>character is an extravagent bisexual bastard who talks loudly and dramatically, intersplicing his dialogue with flirting directed at the PC
>accompanied by unique animations and camerawork for all his scenes
>localizers thought it was problematic for western audiences and went behind the backs of the main team in Japan to change it all
>made him into the blandest, safest generic NPC they could
>even neutered the cutscenes to be just a flat angle of him talking
>Japan team didn't find out until months later when they were confused why the west didn't seem to even know who Haurchefant was and the hardcore weebs started complaining

>Anime subs seem to do just fine

It's a pretty good fanpatch overall but that line is gonna be shitposting stock forever alongside rean hahas and holding back

left>centre>>>>>>>>>>>>right

maybe becouse the memes are now so widespreed and not very good

There is a sensible middle ground that is somehow missed more often than not. But I'll take super literal awkard speak over the made up bullshit that's become common now.

Unfortunately those are your two choices for Zero

Attached: flap.jpg (305x392, 24.82K)

Judgement dub? What did they change?

Developers who care about "their vision" don't hire third party translators to localise their games without any oversight. Japs don't care.

In the dub they changed what the girl says when the guy is checking out the the girl from the lawyers office you’re always in, I can’t remember her name, when you’re walking in first person to the club

Those were all improvements over "Rean..." in English.

Tautologies sound jarring in English.

It doesn't matter. A translator changing text to fit his own agenda is a terrible translator and very seriously shouldn't even be in the profession.

Look, all we really need to do is remove all leftists from the scene and everything will correct itself naturally. It's that simple.

If you're cucked enough that you have to play a localization, then you should be happy with whatever you get. If that bothers you, start learning Japanese.

Liberal's fine if reasonably done or needed.
If it's an extremely nip meme or idiom or saying in the script, go translate it to something that can be as close to the western equivalent as possible if there's a need.
If you need to do accents based off of dialects, then go ahead.
You need to flavour up text based off of unique tics in the japanese version, then go a head as long as it's not overbearing.
Just don't shove memes or completely change shit completely for weak reasons.
only thing I'm stumped on is with honorifics.

Have you ever been ok with working designs or working designs translations?
SQE has been especially awful on the last decade.

>secret agent given a dumbass sex name
I don't know, this is a pretty funny James Bond subversive pun

japanese is such a stiff and literal language, it's insanely boring to read

Attached: cream pie.jpg (575x688, 197.15K)

Stop adding memes
Jesus christ, how is this so hard

bruh moment

Transliterations are best. Multiculturalism is fine. I especially enjoy it when it's homophobic and racist.

>study Japanese
>discover that they were the real memers all along

As a non EOP, I like localized translations to an extent. I loved Working Designs' games and things like Phoenix Wright, but stuff like in OP is just ridiculous.

Of course by praising Working Designs, it is kind of encouraging things like OP since it's up to the person doing the translation/editing, but I guess literal translations are best like the first column of .

The problem with that is some fucking companies make it TOO literal and it's just lifeless and robotic. Ys games are perfect examples of this. Especially 7s Seven

Attached: customize.jpg (2265x2976, 423.65K)

Any devs that handle translations in-house?

>so obsessed that he has the video with a timestamp bookmarked
go outside

Hideo and Kojima.

>stuff like in OP is just ridiculous
But Phoenix Wright almost entirely consists of stuff like OP.

? ? ? ?

Just learn japanese

It absolutely does not.
Plus you have to realize that Japanese are also meme machines too, like with what said. Sometimes you need to use something that the intended localized audience will get. As for Moe, all he was doing is throwing jokes and memes in your face so it completely fit his character. Plus that line flashes your screen in like 0.2 seconds. Don't exaggerate something to make a point.

Localizations nowadays are made by lazy cunts that don't actually care about the games or franchises and probably hate working on them, in fact.

If all localizations had the amount of effort localizations like FFXII had, people wouldn't complain as much.

sounds like someone doesn't know japanese

Working designs is the textbook example of too liberal. Yeah I really want Bill Clinton references in my fantasy rpg along with completely fucked up balance. FUCK Working Designs. I sold off every game I had from them 10 years ago

If you listen to any of these lines with the modded in Japanese voice acting, she isn't saying all of these things at all. Pretty amazing how people were kissing XSEED ass at one point.

Attached: 1447636530726.jpg (371x348, 47.15K)

If there are Japanese voices, then they can localize it however they want because I'll be able to understand if there's a different in the voice lines and dubtitles.

>literal translation
>TV-Nihon translation
>gg translation

Attached: 1569515865670.jpg (3164x4696, 2.97M)

it's funny because ffxii's localization is a case of "hmm i know better than the original writers so i'm going to change things however i want."
>japanese dialogue: "open the menu and choose party then add me"
>english dialogue: "if you find yourself in a bit of a rough spot you should really consider inviting me to tango with the enemy i'll mix them up but good"
i had to set the VA back to english because the difference between the JP VA and the english subs was so jarring i couldn't focus on the game.

Real talk, how is the geofront patch? I waited because I didn't wanna play google translate no kiseki on a PSP emulator. Are all the lines like the OP?

Well, they were correct because the game's atmosphere and mood improves dramatically with the more theatrical tone of the dialogue.

>PSP emulator
What? Just get the Guren translation for the PC version.

Attached: 1449429988372.jpg (574x890, 336.04K)

I'm playing Nioh 2 and the localization is pretty good besides the OI M8 dub but i'm not sure if that's KT or Sony doing the heavy lifting.

i don't really agree but i don't like ffxii either way so i'm not gonna argue about it

Really? I thought Guren only did Ao.

serviceable (but not amazing) if you like xseed shit, but the QoL changes are solid

Funny how so many people will defend to the death shit like FF7's original localization even though there were a lot of mistakes and stuff translated incorrectly.

There's been an English translation for both Zero and Ao for quite a while now.
