Nothing wrong with proper localization but it seems like nowadays translaters cant help themselves and just shove as many memes in as possible.

It's always been this way, people have just are just sensitive to it now.
It's not as if there are only two extremes. It's possible to have a good translation without hacking the original script apart.
Because we're more aware of the original now. We never really knew back then.
Literal translations are shit but there's a fine line between keeping the meaning while making the dialogue interesting and going full retard like this.

If you're paying more attention to minor script tidbits and changes in a game rather than the overall package and how much fun you're having with it, odds are you never really liked video games in the first place.
