I played it at release so did most of my friends (tabletop RPG and or Warhammer players). In my circle only a couple of guys had internet.

First world by definition, but no, I'm no American. Here internet wasn't common in homes until early 2000. Late 90s was slow and pricey, so most people stick to net-cafes or LAN parties for multiplayer.
