Why do you care

One could make a game that fits their own artistic vision and it could be great. However, especially in America, the commercialization of the medium and the "logic" of publishers mean wide appeal and opportunities for monetization are valued more than artistic integrity. Yet even in works that have a degree of artistic freedom, one must know the intended audience, and as such a work cannot surpass the level to which the audience is capable of operating on. It is also worth mentioning that while the industry was founded on vision, vision is seen as risky and is restrained at every turn. This restraint in the interest of wider appeal actually ends up making a mess that appeals to no one and reinforces the idea that vision is a bad thing.

im not sure I think older western games were better like Gauntlet Wizardry and Doom (with HeXen) but seems like most of them now want to tell a story rather focus entirely on gameplay like with wizardry a dated game i can still have fun with because it's not totally convoluted with plot elements and such you're just dungeon crawling with your homies keeping them alive from being one shot by stronger enemies

So you claim that despite the overwhelming majority of Americans being outspoken critics of companies and their products, the sort that would not buy and like garbage, these products inexplicably remain extremely profitable and even well received. Have you considered that a vocal minority exists, and that for the most part Americans no only consume without question but are hostile to the idea of criticism. For a comparable example look to American movies. Also, I never said other countries are free from the effects of commercialization, just that it is stronger in America.

This is unequivocally false. Games like Doom were not made with the intention of designing a method of profit generation, they were designed to be their creators' ideas of what would be enjoyable. These games were not trying to be like anything that already existed as the industry was being built. Nor did creators compromise their vision to market focus group publisher demands as they understood that different sorts of games would naturally accrue their own audiences.

So you assert that pong was painstakingly crafted to achieve the maximum possible capitalization on a well mapped out projection of consumer demand for a block moving game? It is perhaps more likely that it was designed because a passionate creative individual because he wanted to see his vision (i.e. his idea of what would be fun) realized.

Just consider that maybe the point of Doom was "Hey this would be fun! Lets make this, and I bet people like me would also find this fun." where as with modern generic games money and fame are the reason for doing anything.
