They only "remade" it because it didn't run properly on the arcade hardware. Vanilla 2 is the superior version otherwise.

Most people prefer X, but play both. X is a 2.5, essentially a revised version with different enemy placement and some different backgrounds. X also runs better, since it was made with a better engine that prevented the slowdown that 2 has.
