The main problem with data centers (from an environmental point ot view) is that they use a lot of electricity and most of that electricity is generated from fossil fuels. If we switched to sources with no GHGs (renewable or nuclear) it wouldn't be an issue.

And besides, physical media is also made in factories which consume a lot electricity, so that's just as much of a problem.

It's either that or giant landfills.

A lot of that energy requirement comes from cooling, which is why AWS have been investing in passively cooled datacenters in colder regions.
Basically just opening vents and letting the freezing temperatures outside do the work.

The actual mining/extraction is still done by dirt poor nignogs and children.
