So I played HL2 back in the day. Average game, generic plot, the atmosphere is childish all the way like sesame street does 1984 (contrast to god of war or Quake 4 youtube.com/watch?v=CJwyjWpP4XA).
People who disagree on this need to say what they think of the stratification in Quake 4, and Quake 4 is no horror game.
Never did have any desire to play more of it.
People get hyped over HL3. Why? Explain the logic to me. What drew you to HL3?
What was the hype all about? Why?
I actually want this explained from EX-fanboys or people who understand these people.
Well I guess I could say one quality that makes me enjoy the Half Life games is not being retarded. Looking forward to Alyx, good thing I have a friend I can borrow a headset from
>Half Life games is not being retarded What did you mean by this? >Alyx Is it the waifu that gets you interested?
Evan Taylor
I meant the entire sentence It's because I like vr and I like half life games.
Blake Evans
>I like half life games. What makes you like HL games? And is it like like or just like? Because for me they are generic games that i can play or not. if one comes out I possibly play it, they are simply nothing special.
Asher Morgan
Can someone explain to me what made someone be a HL fanboy?
Juan Perez
Combined gameplay and story well and both are bretty good. Gravgun enabled you to actually interact with your environment both in and out of combat, and most of the other weapons were just satisfying to use.
Aiden Williams
>Gravgun This was an interesting aspect I give you that. However where is the >ZOMG GIVE HL3 NOW! Coming from in some people?
>story Arguably the worst part of HL2. What did you think of Quake 4?
Blake Collins
Your third worlder brain is too underdeveloped to understand, Pajeet.
Xavier Hall
HL2 was always shit you faggot fuck off
Logan Ross
>defending Quake 4
Jason Torres
Found the HL fanboy. Want to explain yourself?
Landon Murphy
Its a example know better ones? Give them. Because regardless how mediocre Q4 story is its miles ahead of what HL2 is doing.
HL2 feels like a star trek episode. What are the >Zomb HL2 cybernification is so scary people coming from?
Bentley Lopez
>the atmosphere is childish all the way like sesame street does 1984 You are actually retarded.
Also, are you attempting to defend fucking Quake 4? The game that LITERALLY had nothing going for it except that Stroggification scene that they SPOILED at E3? Fuck off.
Julian Rivera
>You are actually retarded. Contrast the atmosphere of Q4 in the terror department to HL2. Actually answer this.
> defend fucking Quake 4? No Q4 is a generic game.
Explain how the story of HL2 is great. Pro tip I actually know it so I doubt you can tell lies. > Quake 4 At least in G4 the entire squad does not erupt into cheers once you manage to solve the problem of the plug not being in the wall. Like its fucken kindergarten.
Because half-lfie was always about showing off new technology. Having it be a regular shooter in 2020 would be brand suicide.
Bentley Hughes
VR reflects new more granular design principles and an entirely open ended field of potential. It's really too complicated to paraphrase in a Yas Forums post, especially to someone who's fine with point-n-click style shootans that have been done to absolute death. But it's not just "vidya in 3D"
>But it's not just "vidya in 3D" Explain this to me.
Charles Ortiz
>Why? Explain the logic to me. Nah, your explanation for why it's average doesn't satisfy.
Julian Adams
stereoscopy is just one small element of VR, VR essentially is using a number of combined technologies to approximate real life simulation. Any of these technologies would be underwhelming on their own, a gimmick you might say. The core of VR is that it's not just a screen really close to your face, it wraps around you and becomes reality. 6DOF tracked motion controls let you interact with this reality just like you would with your hands IRL. So now instead of FPS having to be hovering gun-cameras where you click a mouse to shoot whatever is in the center of your tiny 2D screen, you're actually inside the world. You pick up a gun but its an object, not this superficial model that snaps to your fov. The iron sights and optics matter for the same reason they do IRL, you don't have a crosshair stamped on your eyeballs perfectly aligned to your target. You must lift the rifle, align the sights to your dominant eye, pull the trigger but your aim jogs because your gun handling is sloppy. So does the other guy. That's not even scratching the surface.
>stereoscopy how important is this to you? >2D screen, you're actually inside the world I'm going to doubt this BS I tried out some VR movies in brick and mortar stores and it was always gimmickey and vomit vision for video.
Jacob Perry
Yeah I didn't expect you'd understand, can't be helped
Anthony Hall
VR has been around for 30 years at least
Colton Miller
computers were around for ages before the advent of the personal computer
James Roberts
>"I tried out some VR movies in brick and mortar stores" That is not real VR That is a shit, you can't do anything with that.
Aaron Sanders
>That is not real VR So the store deliberately showcases shit so people don't buy from it? Or even the best tech of this years VR is garbage.
I think I go with the latter.
>That is not real VR Where can anyone find real VR?
Adrian Morgan
Do you know the difference between 3DOF and 6DOF? Watching 3D videos in VR is legit painful and anyone who finds it enjoyable is braindamaged.
Cameron Gray
>Watching 3D videos in VR is legit painful and anyone who finds it enjoyable is braindamaged. I agree with this one has to be the stupidest meme from VR.
And people still point and laugh at what was shilled to us about watching movies in VR.
>Do you know the difference between 3DOF and 6DOF? Tell me more about it for games. I hear that 6DOF is great for modeling in 3D.
Caleb Watson
3DOF for head tracking is horrible because you can only look around and the entire "world" is glued to your head because it won't positionally track you. Absoltuely sickening experience. 3DOF shit is essentially dead. 6DOF is the real shit. Obviously it won't work for normal vids, and volumetric video is still an experimental thing that looks like shit and takes up terabytes. But for real-time rendered things like games, modern VR's low latency tracking just feels natural. It's what VR is supposed to be like.
Zachary Fisher
>3DOF shit is essentially dead. Elaborate on this what are you talking about? Exactly? >6DOF is the real shit
Levi Reed
three degrees of freedom only tracks x/y rotation six degrees of freedom tracks rotation AND translation aka the full gamut of movement through 3D space 3DOF is utterly gimped and bad and unnatural but early VR used it because tracking wasn't quite there yet. Also just the nature of traditional 3D video forces it to be a 3DOF experience and I find it so unpleasant it's like torture. With 3DOF your head is locked in place, in 6DOF you can move your head around, look under desks, skirts, suck your own dick, etc
Ryder Parker
It was a fairly good game showing off Valve's fancy new engine that people are still using for interesting stuff to this day. It's equivalent to Unreal, more or less. The desire to play more of it mostly stems from the desire to see valve do anything- LITERALLY ANYTHING- that isn't continuing to milk DOTA and CSGO. It's one part "right place right time" (good looking and solidly physics'd engine in 2004 got people to think more highly of it than it strictly deserved), one part incomplete story/cliffhanger, one part meme magic (valve can't count to three), and one part nostalgia.
Zachary Taylor
>3D video forces it to be a 3DOF experience and I find it so unpleasant it's like torture just don't move lmao
Joseph Reyes
So are you talking about VR tech VR VR tech or about tradicitonal PC games VS VR tech ????? >With 3DOF your head is locked in place, in 6DOF Head tracking or what?
Jack Parker
not that guy but how can you stay alive while being so retarded
OK. >CSGO Remember when in CSS you where able to move objects around? I don't think this feature is coming back to any game EVER.
>valve is actually retarded Nintendo makes Mario games, MS makes Halo games and valve does nothing.
Maybe ESG will force Valve to make exclusives for its platform. If HL3 is a EGS exclusive I will laugh so hard you will need to call emergency services.
Grayson Brooks
Look not everyone lives in your less then 1% of the video game industry market lingo.
Can you translate this for outsiders? 6DOF for head or hands or what? Is 3DOF a reference to traditional gaming or what?
Cameron Torres
how about you use google for once you fucking retard? why even the most basic information has to be handed to you on a plate?
I know nothing of Q4's universe and a fair bit about HL's despite never having played a single game other than black mesa, could you please elaborate on what makes Q4's world good and/or better than HL's?
Carson Sanchez
Excitement over Half-Life 3 is nothing but a meme.
True Half-Life fans were excited for, then pissed off about, then depressed about Half-Life 2: Episode Three. In 2005, Valve announced instead of releasing a full big sequel Half-Life 3 (which would have meant huge tech innovations and new plot/setting, akin to the jump from 1 to 2) they would just continue expanding the Half-Life 2 story and universe by releasing a trilogy of episodic games (meaning staying in the HL2 setting and making small incremental tech changes, instead of changing to a new setting and making big tech changes that a HL3 would have entailed). They said the three Episodes would be out by "Christmas 2007."
Episode One came out in 2006. Episode Two came out in 2007 and ended on a cliffhanger.
Episode Three never came out. Half-Life fans constantly asked about it. Eventually Valve refused to say anything about it. Half-Life fans kept on asking.
Eventually a bunch of stupid bandwagoners jumped on it, but since the lowest common denominator can't be bothered to keep track of the subtleties and details of actual situations, they flooded discussions with dumb "Half-Life 3" memes that swamped out all the real fans.
Oliver Russell
It's actually degrees of freedom in this context It doesn't even apply to flat monitors, monitors are 0DOF
Jeremiah Lewis
>can't be helped stop outing yourself as a fucking weeb jesus fucking christTTTT
Jason Robinson
Episode 2 is the best game in the series and it ends with a cliffhanger so people who finished it are mad about it.
Nathan Moore
>DOF = Depth of field And saved to the VR fag cringe compilation. imagine being so fucked up and up your own ass that you refuse to clarify if asked and only shitpost. imagine being so far up your ass that you refuse to acknowledge any outside world exists. >DOF = Depth of field >Bess because 6DOF = Six degrees of freedom is impossible to make out of the acronym. Oh wait you are just peak VR retard. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_degrees_of_freedom
>outing yourself as a fucking weeb >on Yas Forums lol? what did election tourist mean by this
Colton Rodriguez
bitch, i'm not even the guy who you were talking to, if wikipedia can't help you understand, nobody can.
You are so fucking dumb not even military would take you
Grayson Thomas
6DOF: you can move your head in spcae 3DOF: you can only change the orientation of your head
Ryder Smith
>You are so fucking dumb not even military would take you Damn, now that’s an insult.
Robert Jenkins
>everyone on Yas Forums is a loser weeb like me guise even the 4 people over at /po/ even if literally only ONE (arguably 2) boards are actually dedicated to anime 2004 was almost two decades ago ya fuckin retard
>election tourist not only you're wrong (not even american OR european for christ's sake, never even visited pol) but that shit was about 6 years ago. that term is as meaningless as it comes right now because that "tourist" userbase you're describing it's the actual userbase now, for better or worse.
now stop fucking basing your way of speaking out of fucking hentai ya goof
It is coming from the fact they've been waiting for a cliff hanger to be answered for like 13 years. The world building of HL2 is interesting, it is a setting you don't see often in video games, combined with a physics engine which gives a lot of interactivity to the world. HL2 does a good job at tricking the player into thinking they aren't the god king chosen one, on top of having memorable characters from the first and second games plus episodes.
Joseph Walker
>world Its not the world. Its more >never having played a single game you need to play HL2, basically the NPC good guys congratulate you on every thing you do like you figuring the gigantic wall plug is not plugged in into the machine is some achievement deserving the nobel prize. They seriously cheer how great you did. After that you can not take anything in HL2 seriously.
Play HL2 I recommend it only to see this for yourself. And this is HL2 specific.
> Q4 Is the only game example I know of the evils of turned into a cyborg. HL2 fans love to parade how scary the one monster enemies are because their BACK STORY (!!!) involves them being humans who are turned into cyborgs.
Only nothing of this is ever shown in game unlike Q4. Q4 is not that great of a game however it does not ruin its atmosphere with kindergarten shit and shows the evils of being forcibly turned into a cyborg slave.
Also Q2 did have the same thing only with far more inferior graphical potential. Q2 broken POW voice lines youtu.be/_x782ZQZYYI
Like explained before HL2 feels like a kids scary show, its scary however not to scary to not freak out the kids for real.
TL;DR Neither Q2/Q4 or HL2 are horror games however HL2 fans pretending like these cyborg are the most scary thing ever is ridiculous.
Thanks >6DOF: you can move your head in spcae So you can move your head forwards and back? What difference does this make? Humans are not giraffes.
I don't see the need to turn my head around as it is. Explain what benefit to games this gives?
I actually want to understand this.
Noah Smith
>HL2 does a good job at tricking the player into thinking they aren't the god king chosen one Uhhhhhh you mean the game where the player character is regarded as a messiah and is an invincible killing machine despite being a science nerd
Carson Mitchell
Oh man lemme grab some popcorn
Brayden Sanders
Because every Half-Life has been a huge leap in gaming technology you mongoloid! The games themselves are fine, but they usher in a new age of gaming each time.
