I trust Collett over Woes and I can totally believe the allegations. Woes has been talking about sorting himself out for years and he's still chain smoking and downing full sugar coke every day. That one side is much better than the other in a cold war, is too naive to buy into, but I do suspect that the West were better at it, since the oppression here was/is largely outsourced, so it does not look like the Western regimes are behind it.
It's clear that players like hope not hate and similar work for the government though, since they are fed information from glowniggers, and they are never prosecuted for their crimes.
A good thing with the Assange case,in all the bad things, is that we got to see how far the Western regimes were willing to go to destroy a man.
In the US the most similar program revealed is CoIntelPro ran by the FBI (acknowledged to have existed in the post war years until the mid 70's) but I doubt it was as advanced a technique as Zersetzung. The FBI especially in the 70's-90's were better known for electronic surveillance, undercover operatives and informants, and a gung ho mode of operations.
In Britain there is the Special Branch of the police and the MI5 who operate against dissidents.
